Just watched this in a cinema

loads of fun. I'm always surprised how well-paced the movie is; it instantly sets up the characters, has them goof around for a bit, but gets straight into the action with one of the smoothest buildups in cinematic history. the way it slowly reveals more and more about the monster is probably the best i've ever seen from a movie. also, making the film a comedy is such a smart decision but it allows for the characters to be funny and likable, so we don't want to see them die. when someone does die, it's genuinely heartbreaking, and when someone gets out by the skin of their teeth, it's genuinely nailbiting. the practical effects are pretty great too, and the sound design is top notch. tho, some of the lines are pretty corny, and there are a lot of reaction/explanation shots ("look, here comes another!" or "wow, it died!") that make it feel like it's a TV show from the 70's. otherwise, top-notch monster movie.

Yeah, for being a cheesy comedy, it has terrific pacing as a horror. I think it's because it wholly commits to being a quality. Good acting, good script. Characters develop realistically and naturally. I think it's a reminder that you can have cheesy b-movie qualities without being trash.
