Good in what sense?

Judging from the discussion forums, this seems to be a movie that is so bad that it becomes good or good pulpy movie that does not take itself seriously (classic film-making) This is going to come on HBO India in a few days so thought of asking this...
Please answer.

I wouldn't toss it into the so bad it's good category. I enjoyed it when I saw it as a child, and I still enjoy it now, though for different reasons.

This was on AMC today and I hadnt seen it in a few years, but now I remember why I like the film. It's just reminiscent of a good old monster movie. Solid, cheesy B flick that doesnt try to be more than what it is.

Agree with JHBLADER86 - lovely low-key, low maintenance B movie. Tightly edited. Not a wasted line - I love KB's suggestion that the US government thought up the 'graboids' as a surprise for the Russians. Still a funny line.

Oh. And this film hasn't dated. And it shows survivalists as the good guys (sort of). A classic.

This is not a good movie in any way. I've watched it 3 times (too many). The only time I could watch the whole movie was today (the 3rd time) because I just had to know how it ended and if it made any sense at all.

It's just entertaining. I don't usually have patience for this kind of stuff.

"This is not a good movie in any way." "It's just entertaining."

Make up your mind!

Tremors has a classic movie feel. It's not too serious but not too silly or cheesy. It's genuinely funny, it's well directed, great locations, amusing characters. It's a good quality, fun movie.

sounds like you've only watched it once.

I love it when somebody says "not good in any way" and then doesn't say WHY it's "not good in any way".

So you watched it three times, but actually only watched it once, then decided it is "not a good movie in anyway"(without explaining why), but you claim to have been entertained by it. I'm quite sure the #1 qualification for a good movie is to be entertaining. In fact, that's all that matters to me.

I totally agree with halonone and JHBLADER86 :D

Because for what it is (monster B-movie) it is perfection (as reflected in the name of the town). Sure, it's not The Godfather or anything like that, but it's easily one of the best if not THE best monster survival flick. It's just very entertaining and funny in a campy feel-good sort of way.

It's not so bad it's good, it's just good. Awesome creatures, effects, characters and it is just awesome.

Exactly what ellesplace said. I think it's one of the most perfect combinations of serious/self-awareness I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. It's just a good flick, I don't know about all this so bad it's good nonsense.

i love this movie because it is very entertaining
it's never Joan Van Ark- Marge Simpsons

reply

This is certainly not a `so bad it's good' movie, it is simply a good entertaining monster movie.

reply

exactly there's nothing bad about it. There is no better comedy horror movie.

I also agree it's the perfect combo of serious/not-too-serious. The characters all feel real and I learn to care for them and love them. At the same time, the director wasn't trying to create the new "Jaws" or "Alien", but this lack of trying actually works in the film's favor, adding plenty of comic relief and camp/cheese. Definitely not in the "So bad it's good" category. It's a very well made movie with great contributions from everyone involved.

I think it's just about perfect. The characters are all likeable, and they react like I would actually expect people to act like in that situation, with a bit of common sense, humour and fear. For me, the main selling point is they actually try to use their brains and think their way out of the situation, and each time they do something happens to screw their plans. That really isn't rocket science, but so many films of this form utterly fail to do that. With this film you think 'Yeah, I'd do that too!' and then something happens and you think 'Bugger, they're screwed'. It's the one-upmanship between them and the monsters which makes this movie so enjoyable. One of my favourite movies that I could watch any time.

"Good in what sense?"

In every sense. The acting and characters are great. And I agree with other posters. I love how the worms start on top, then the humans get an edge, lose it back to the worms, get the edge again....It's a back and forth battle all the way to the end.

I love to love my Lisa.

Like everyone else said, this movie is not "so bad, it's good". It's just good.

There's nothing for me to really add here. All I can do is just agree with what the other posters said. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's not ridiculously corny either. It's a horror-comedy, and a good one. The characters are all believable and likeable. You're actually rooting for these people to survive, instead of hoping they all get eaten. I think that's become pretty rare in horror flicks. The special effects are pretty well-done. This was before CGI had begun to be used regularly. The worms are all animatronic puppets. Infact, I don't think there's a single CGI scene in the whole film. The story is rather vague. It doesn't explain the origins of the worms. I'm somebody who normally likes explanations, but the way the characters throw out theories about where the worms came from and argue over them, is great. The mystery works here. I didn't care that it wasn't explained

It's a great monster movie that wasn't trying to be more than what it was. The sequels that followed were decent too, but the first one is the best of them.
