So, let's be realistic here.........they used the CAT to escape because it was the only vehicle that could get up the "jeep trail".......um, so why didn't they use the CAT to go up the road and clear all the debris that covered the road and everyone could've just driven out in their vehicles like normal? Ah, movies!

Time could have been a factor. By the time they cleared the road and got back, the Graboids might have torn the buildings down and got everyone else. Earl estimated they had about 1/2 hour, it would have taken longer to clear the path. Remember what Val said to Burt "By the time you got back we'd all be dead."
