How does this compare?
To the great SF films like Alien, 2001, Star Wars, Forbidden Planet? And to the remake?

shareMuch better than the abysmal remake. Not quite on par with the classics you mentioned. Still a fun movie.
shareGood enough for me. I can do for a fun movie. Thanks!
shareI probably won't be watching the remake, it seems to be universally panned but I thought the original was outstanding. Never a dull moment and even if I didn't know beforehand Philip K Dick was the source for the movie, I would have guessed, it is so much like many of his stories, with mutants, psychics, reality. A ton of action. I didn't pay attention to its R rating (I assumed it would be PG-13) but it certainly earns it, I was a bit shocked at times. I think this might be my favorite Arnold performance, even if it might not be my favorite Arnold film, which would probably be Predator. The mystery is well handled throughout and I found myself immersed in the future this film creates. The practical effects don't always work but they were still very impressive. Sharon Stone was a surprise. I have never seen her better, both in terms of her beauty and her acting. A strong supporting cast. And the overall productions values were high, it looks like they spent a lot on this film.
I would not quite put this in the same league as the all time greats in SF but it's close. I'd give it 9/10.
The small short story this film is based on never leaves Earth and has a different ending with quirky twist. I think they took the idea of implanted memories and a hidden past and just about everything thereafter was down to the film makers.
shareForbidden Planet, 2001 and Alien are more technical and slower-paced, with Alien having the real horror side to it.
Star Wars is, well, Star Wars - fantasy-space-adventure for everyone.
Total Recall has more sexual tones, swearing, lots of guns, action, dark humour, quite a different beast to the others. And yes, a lot of fun!
Yeah, Total Recall was a hard R-rated piece of awesome action in a Sci-Fi setting. It was amazing! Maybe not better than 2001 or Alien, but certainly has its place among the great space classics.
shareAll the films are certainly within my top 10 for sci-fi. (Not the TR remake though, watched that once and was very disappointed.)
shareFOR ME...IT BELONGS IN THAT GROUP...ALL GREAT SCI FI FLICKS...THE REMAKE WAS A SERVICABLE ACTION FLICK WITH A SCI FI SETTING...NOT MUCH MORE.🙂
shareI knew it was troll from the moment you insinuated that the awful remake was better.
shareTotal Recall has the pacing and energy as Voerhoven's other film "RoboCop". I definitely recommend it and strongly advise avoiding the remake with Colon Finkle
shareNOTHHINGGG COMPARES.....TO YOU🙂
