Not as bad as its reputation...

I read that this was Clint's worst film. Critics didn't like it, and fans didn't care for it either. While it's no Unforgiven or Million Dollar Baby, it's very watchable, has some cool scenes in it, and it's never boring. Clint fans should definitely check it out.

Clint's worst film is Pink Cadillac.

The OP is right, 'The Rookie' is not as bad as its reputation, IT'S WORSE!.
Frankly I watched it only because I'm trying to see all the films directed by Clint Eastwood (one of my fav filmmakers alive).
'The Rookie' is perhaps the worst movie Mr. Eastwood has ever directed, only 'Firefox' and perhaps 'Sudden Impact' are as bad as 'The Rookie'.
The movie looks quite dated, it feels like a 70's movie shot in the 90's. Even the music makes you think we are watching Eastwood's next movie after 'The Gauntlet' (or any other action movie from the 70's for that matter).
The storyline is no much better, it's clichéd at nauseam, overlong and boring. It's sad to see so many talented actors being miscast and/or wasted (Raúl Juliá, Sonia Braga, even Clint Eastwood himself).
In short 'The Rookie' is another pre-Unforgiven stinker from Mr. Eastwood.

The Rookie isn't great, but it's not horrible. I found it entertaining, but it's not a lost masterpiece or anything like that.

Pink Cadillac is Clint's worst movie, even though he didn't direct it (his stunt coordinator, Buddy Van Horn, directed it). But it was put out by Clint's production company, Malapso. So he is responsible.

Firefox is an underrated, excellent film. I don't consider it awful at all.

I like Sudden Impact, too, though some of the acting isn't the greatest (by the white trash gang).

i like it. i laugh at the bits meant to be funny and i laugh at the bits that are so bad theyre funny! all round laughs from me. just a bit too long, should be 90mins imo

I saw it onTV this week and was suprised that i enjoyed it. Its a buddy comedy, its not a serious film, Charlie Sheen was pretty funny.

I have yet to see an Eastwood film where I was not entertained.

I have no clue why this one gets bashed so much. It's a solid and very entertaining cop actioner with Clint & Charlie. Heck, I enjoy it more than the overrated UNFORGIVEN or MILLION DOLLAR BABY.

Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!
