I read that this was Clint's worst film. Critics didn't like it, and fans didn't care for it either. While it's no Unforgiven or Million Dollar Baby, it's very watchable, has some cool scenes in it, and it's never boring. Clint fans should definitely check it out.
I'm recording it on Channel 5 as I type. I have seen it before but it's been that long I can barely remember it. It must be my least watched Eastwood film as I'm a huge fan of the man. I remember not caring much for it the first time round but I'm willing to give it another try. Also Death Wish II is on after it and I haven't seen that one in years either. Just got me thinking how great it would have been if Bronson and Eastwood had made a movie together!
It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's definitely watchable and has some really good moments. It's never boring. It was a lot better than most people have said it is.
BUT dont forget what that is comparing it to, its like having a massive pile of fresh perfect apples and then saying which of the batch of apples is the worst apple in the pile.
That does not mean that that apple will taste at all bad, it will still taste great in fact, but just not nearly as good as the other apples from that perfect pile of apples.
Same applies to this movie, its a good movie and quite great compared to most movies of that year, BUT compared to other clint eastwood directed movies its just not that good, in fact one of the worst...
You're right. It is the worst movie he's directed.
It's not the worst movie he's been in. That movie would be Pink Cadillac, which technically wasn't directed by him. It was directed by Buddy Van Horn, Clint's stunt coordinator, who also directed Any Which Way You Can and The Dead Pool. Clint was director by proxy on that one. His production company, Malpaso, produced it, though, so it's "his" film in a way.
I get your main point, however. Compared to some hack director's work (and there are a lot of hacks out there), The Rookie is better than their films. But when compared to Clint's other work (especially his recent stuff, which is phenomenal), The Rookie is a piece of crap.
It's pretty cliched and generic, but still on the level and not a one dull moment in sight. I would rate it a bit higher than mediocre. Eastwood the man.
