misunderstood genius/south park
this has gotta be the most misunderstood movie of all time. years ago when i saw my first episode of south park i was immediately reminded of robocop 2...i can’t remember which south park episode and scene it was, but i remember thinking: this humor is so over-the-top, so insane and exaggerated, so clever, that it actually makes fun of itself AND anyone who would be dumb enough to laugh at it without the knowledge that it’s making fun of itself (and anyone who would be dumb enough to laugh at it without the knowledge...). to say that is was a parody of a parody is an understatement. robocop 2 does the exact same thing, but no one seems to be able to recognize this. i watch it over and over and can’t comprehend why people don’t understand it. robocop 2 it’s the most cleverly, comically, hopelessly negative movie i’ve ever seen, sometimes even in its deliberate unwillingness to put forth effort.
i laughed my ass off because i was trying to explain this to one of my friends as we were watching south park (“a nightmare on face time” i think), and my friend was like “you’re nuts dude,” and then ten minutes later stan’s dad walks into a video store and requests “robocop 2 and the director’s cut of blade runner.”
when i see a movie i don’t like, it’s rare that i’ll say “this just sucks” unless i’m ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN i completely understood the movie. because there’s always the chance that there was something about it that i just didn’t “get.” i wish more people were like that.
