I think everyone will agree that P2 is one of the most underrated films of the 90's. What about other sci-fi films? Your ideas guys? My list will be a bit long cause Sci-Fi is my favorite movie genre and the decade 1990-1999 is my favorite era for Sci-Fi
My list:
Strange Days Virtuosity Mimic Dark City Demolition Man eXistenZ Class of 1999 The Arrival The Lawnmower Man Alien 3 RoboCop 2 The Thirteenth Floor The Time Shifters The Shadow Men FutureSport Timecop Them (1996) Screamers No Escape Deep Rising The Relic Fortress Judge Dredd Body Snatchers Split Second Redline Shadowchaser Brainscan Sphere Space Truckers Alien Intruder Event Horizon The Rocketeer Virus Soldier
Guilty Pleasures:
Barb Wire Vampirella RoboCop 3 The Apocalypse (1997) Congo Lawnmower Man 2
great list! you'll excuse me if i only mention those i've seen all the way through... strange days was great, totally unlike anything that had come before... dark city was also unique. demolitiom man was little more than a stallone vehicle in some ways, but featured great performances from many other actors. class of 1999. i saw this on cable a few times, and thought it great fun when i was 12 or so... alien 3... at the time it came out, i was in love with the previous film, and somewhat underwhelmed by it... but i have since seen the 'assembly cut' and realize that it had great ambitions, but executive decisions at fox kinda killed its potential. robocop 2. awesome. it keot the satirical humor of the original, dealt with then-current social issues, and introduced an amazing villain in kane/robocop 2. timecop. a van damme career booster, with a different and interesting take on time travel. screamers, somewhat loosely based on a philip k dick story, quite enjoyable. no escape... so much wasted potential in it... judge dredd. comically unaware of the satirical elements of the comics it was based on, which made it all the better for it. my only complaint would be how much dredd's face is seen on-screen, but it is, like another on this list, a stallone career vehicle... sphere, a film that is relatively accurately based on a michael crichton novel (compared to other, more popular renditions of his books, like *cough* jurassic park...) space truckers. what any b science fiction film should aspire to... a discerning eye for the combination of reality and ridiculousness, with a great cast and semi-convincing production event horizon... one of few films that convincingly combines science fiction and horror, and the idea that sometimes man strays into things he truly cannot comprehend or control. love it unconditionally. soldier. for one, it stars kurt russell, one of my favorite actors. also, i love paul anderson's idea that it takes place in the same universe as blade runner. others not mentioned on the list: city of lost children. a film that, to me, achieves the concept of steampunk more than any other movie has... alien resurrection. from the same director as the previous film, a fun and different look at the universe of the alien franchise. stargate. strongly overshadowed by the (admittedly very cool) tv show, it was one of those films that comes along once in a generation... the prophecy. not strictly science fiction, but definitely one of the better takes on biblical ideas in the 90s. major props for introducing me to viggo mortensen, who remains one of my favorite actors to date. escape from l.a.- sure, it's not much more than a rehash of the original, but with some updated ideas and a great sense of satire. plus, ya know, kurt russell, who just breathes awesomeness... 12 monkeys. bruce willis, brad pitt, terry gilliam, time travel, an apocalypse-in-the-making... cannot go wrong... vampires. another john carpenter movie, in which james woods is given all the scenery a man can chew... starship troopers... a far cry from the real greatness of the novel, i know this well... but still, a well-made movie, with a subtle sense of irony, nearly too subtle to be believed as such... the 5th element... for a guy born in 1980, to whom the original trilogy was childhood gospel, this movie achieved the feel of star wars much more closely than the prequel films did...
in short, yeah, the 90s produced the best crop of science fiction films. there have been many good movies, and some that are not so good, bit still enjoyable, since...
"Cinema was made for fantasy, rather than normal types of stories." - Ray Harryhausen
Dark City is a masterpiece. I also had a lot of fun with Brainscan, Split Second, Demolition Man, eXistenZ, Mimic, and Soldier. I agree that Robocop 2 and Judge Dredd are underrated.
But one of the ones you missed was Freaked, which is now a cult classic, directed by Tom Stern and Alex Winter (of Bill & Ted fame). You should find it and check it out. It's a lot of fun and has some genuine stars in it. There's also one that went direct-to-video that I found rather enjoyable, Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor (not to be confused with the '70s low-budget movie The Alien Factor).
EDIT: I debated about putting this last one on the list, but what the hell: The Caller, a suspense thriller starring Malcolm McDowell and Madolyn Smith. The only thing I'll say about it is this: If you're ever able to get your hands on a copy, you might understand why I was hesitant to mention it. Also, it's from the late '80s and not the '90s, but that's close enough for me.
EDIT AGAIN: Oh! and how, how, how could you have missed Cube?
