Why did they way so long to do a sequel?

It took 8 years for us to get a sequel for The NeverEnding Story, which meant Barrett Oliver, Noah Hathaway, and Tami Stronach were too old to re-play their roles. Instead, we got Jonathan Brandis, Kenny Morrison, and Alexandra Johnes (Johnes is barely in the movie anyway).

Legal issues with the writer Michael Ende. He was upset about changes to the story in the original film and wanted say in future films.
