debt paid or unpaid?

Early in the film, Caspar offers Tom to square his debt with Lazar if Tom will join him, which Tom does not long after. But Lazar hounds Tom throughout the film to pay his debt? Is there any explanation of what happened? Did Tom work up more debt? Did Caspar not follow through?

Tom takes out a huge wad of cash from Caspar’s pocket. He makes a call to Lazar immediately after he shoots Bernie. We’re led to believe that the money he pocketed from Caspar was enough to cover Lazar’s debt
