best coen brothers film

personally I think its up there as one of their best, probably the best film period they've done.

I'm gonna say it, curious how many agree, or if everyone think its complete blasphemy.....I don't see how no country, fargo, and o brother are considered the top. I like them all but I don't really see it.

Absolutely '! Top 5 . 1- no country for old men 2- the big lebowski 3- Fargo 4&5 - millers crossing and true grit

reply

My favourite is Fargo but they have made so many great films.

It is my favorite Cohn Brothers movie by far.

I agree. A great movie. Too bad it was released the same year as Goodfellas.

I think one reason this film is one of their best, along with No Country, is that it has a pretty conventional narrative which doesn't rely on insider nods and too-clever-by-half gimmicks.

Lots of Coen brothers films are good, but lots of Coen brothers films lean too heavily on a kind of a smug, smarter-than-you attitude. I thought Barton Fink was just awful for this reason.

This is among their greatest, but they have such a solid body of work that it's impossible for me to poinpoint just one as their absolute best. If you held a gun to my head I'd go with "The Hudsucker Proxy," mostly because it's such a note perfect take on the screwball comedies, especially those of Preston Sturges, that I love, yet done in a completely original manner. That said, I'd say Miller's Crossing, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? are all equally great, and I can make a strong case for any of those five as their best work.

It's a good movie but I think The Big Lebowski is the best

It is one of my favorites. The order depends on what I'm in the mood for. But my top 5, in no particular order:

Miller's Crossing
Lebowski
Fargo
A Serious Man
No Country for Old Men.

I see more in each of these with each watching.
