I agree 100%. Two movies, both hard to "pin down", but similar in so many thematic ways. Good call.

The Lounge People (1992) has the same other worldly, nothing solid under your feet feel to it that Joe does. I think somewhat North (1994) does, too. I think all three movies have a similar attraction.

"Field of Dreams", with one of Kostner's few good performances, is warm and funny oddness on a similar level.

Whenever I watch this movie, I can't help but think of Metropolis. The entry into the factory, the plodding of the characters walking in, and the escape from a mechanized society.
