How and why?
I think the original movie is right up there with Stand By Me and Goonies.
Why do you think the low ratings? Do I remember checking it before the new ones came out and had around 7.4
Most ratings are manipulated to push a narrative. Today they try and make bad things seems good.
Your analysis was good. This movie had a strong atmosphere and strong characters.

Scores should be reversed at least
The remakes is not bad, but, it's a remake that used all the CGI available in it's favor.
The original had Tim Curry offering the performance of a lifetime.
