Why are there so many empty pews at the Christmas Eve service Kevin and Old Man Marley attend? Christmas Eve is when most people attend church (outside of possibly Easter), so the space should be packed with people, especially in the early 1990s when people were more religious.

Correct - the choir was practicing perhaps hours before services were scheduled to start. I was in our church choir 60 years ago, and that's what we did.
On Christmas Eve Masses the chair usually starts singing early before more people come in.
