Do you know what is a disgrace about this film?

That it did not win best picture.

This wasn't the best movie that year. This is one of the best movies of all time. If I am not mistaken, I think Dances with Wolves won the oscar. Could be the biggest joke in the history of film!!!

reply

Not sure about the best picture aspect of Goodfellas but it has amazing reachability.

reply

goodfellas is a film where people are being verbally and physically abused non stop

directed by a Polanski supporter

reply

What's your point?

reply

Everyone who makes movies has to say they support Polanski. They don't want to alienate the pedos in charge of the business.

reply

did you know marlon brando sexually abused his own daughter ?

dustin hoffman molested Rachel Weisz not to mention he bullied streep

reply

Dances with Wolves deserved it. Not saying that I prefer that film or think it's better, but it's clearly an infinitely more "Oscar-y" film than Goodfellas.

Goodfellas' reputation speaks for itself.

reply

goodfellas is bullying from start to finish

directed by a polanski enabler

I read Hill's story, Wiseguy : Life in a Mafia Family in the mid 80's and was excited, full of anticipation when I discovered it had been adapted to film a few years later. I was especially eager to see who would be cast as Jimmy the Gent, James Conway ( De Niro ) because of how his reputation was depicted in the book. It was almost reverential at times. He was legendary from what I remember. I have mixed feelings about De Niro's portrayal.

reply

Goodfellas is an adaption of Nicholas Pileggi's book Wiseguys. It has nothing to do with Hill's constantly changing stories and drunken self-promotion. Hill was a drug addict alcoholic who never learned how to tell the truth. He has (had) no credibility.

reply

You don't know what you're talking about.

reply

Are you saying that Goodfellas is not an adaption of Pileggi's book Wiseguys? Really? Can you read?

reply

There is no ' Wiseguys ' by Nicholas Pillegi. The title I initially referenced is the correct one . Now, piss off, baiting troll !

reply

It's questionable, but the film was very vulgar in it's content. Plus Crime movies aren't the most attractive genre when it comes to best picture. Oscars. As said, they chose a film they felt was more in depth with their standards. I'm sure it may have won if Dances with Wolves were never made.

reply

There is nothing questionable about what the movie is based on. If you think the movie was vulgar, read the book I mentioned. And I wasn't suggesting it was Oscar worthy, only claiming I was captivated by the book and looking forward to the film. And didn't I say I was ambivalent about De Niro's performance ?

reply

Buy it on Amazon, if you know how to read anything longer than a movie description;

https://www.amazon.com/Wiseguy-Nicholas-Pileggi/dp/1439184216/ref=sr_1_3?s=office-electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1496238852&sr=8-3&keywords=nicholas+pileggi

“This is the true-crime bestseller that was the basis for Martin Scorsese’s film masterpiece GoodFellas…”

reply

And this from IMDB;
Director: Martin Scorsese
Writers: Nicholas Pileggi (book), Nicholas Pileggi (screenplay) | 1 more credit »
Stars: Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci | See full cast & crew »

Who's the troll?

reply

You still are! In addition to which, only a complete dumbass would cite nonworking links as verification to his distorted argument.

reply

How about Wikipedia?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiseguy_(book)

Wisguy, not Wiseguys.

Now, can we get back to discussing the film?

reply

Which goes back to my original post; there is no " Wisguy" Just like there is no "Wiseguys." At least your link is viable and accurate, corroborating said original post.

reply

I think it may be known as Wiseguy colloquially much like The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is known as "The Guide".

reply

Whatever; the point is, it WAS told from Henry Hill's pov, just as the entire movie was narrated through his character ( Ray Liotta) and it was Pillegi that approached Hill and propositioned him about writing a book based upon his life in the mob.

reply

Wait you said eariler "There is no ' Wiseguys ' by Nicholas Pillegi." So now you're saying there is?
Where does your mis-information begin and end?

reply

There is no Wiseguys by Nicholas Pillegi just as there is no such word as " eariler, " ignoramus troll.

reply

Put down the meth pipe dude, you’re not living in the real world and your brain in fried.

reply

db - EVERY WORD that Henry Hill (and Karen Hill) says in voiceover narration in Goodfellas is taken VERBATIM from Pileggi's book. The book is basically a transcription of Pileggi's interviews with Henry and Karen. Goodfellas is ENTIRELY based on that book. Pileggi wrote the screenplay for the movie. It's kind of comical to see you arguing with people and calling the trolls while being so completely wrong.

reply

I think you have a serious reading comprehension problem.

reply

I didn't read the book... I thought the movie was great... one of the best ever...

If it doesn't follow reality fully or if the portrayals are not entirely realistic, I don't really mind... if it makes the movie better, I'm all for it... it's not meant to be a documentary

reply

Oscars rarely get it right.

reply

I ought to try to give Dances with Wolves another chance but I couldn't get passed the first hour. It was so boring seeing Kevin Costner just walking around doing nothing interesting for an hour. I think I may just see it again but fast forward to where the Indians show up. For a movie supposed to be about Indians and making them sympathetic they sure spend too much time on Kevin Costner's character. Goodfellas doesn't have that problem though. It should have probably won best screenplay over dances with wolves.

reply

I haven't seen all the films from that year, but it would take a lot to surpass this.

reply

not that great of a film

reply

Ive never heard anyone make the claim that it wasnt 'a Great Film' but carry on...its all a matter of one's taste really

reply

I didn't see it until a few years ago. I have heard basically my entire life how great Goodfellas was. It was good but wasn't as good as Casino IMO.
