why did Major Fambrough (maury chaykin)....(spoilers ahead)?

kill himself after uttering his absurd line about wetting himself?

i understand his death immediately after issuing Dunbar his orders (coupled with Timmon's death on the way back), would've ended any hopes of reinforcements getting to Dunbar, and thus advancing the story, but what the F was that all about?!?

it is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it

They should have at least made the town look more deserted than it was. Because then you wouldn't question as much if he had something to live for.
And it would have made much more sense if he was the only man in town except for a few pendling farmers keeping his sand fort up for years. And then Dunbar comes in, saying he was issued volantarily to the place which was the root of his pointlessness and shame. Because he was nothing to nobody.
Dunbar comes in with adventure and a spark in his eye, and with that just drags him further down in his depression and selfcontempt. But I think the way they protrayed it was a bit to ridiculous for me, especially considering how the rest of the movie was.

Wasn't he going mad from syphilis?

An opinion is not offensive just because you do not agree with it.
