Okay - I don't think it's a *great film*(i.e. masterpiece like The Godfather, Taxi driver, etc.), but I think especially for his first feature as a director, and considering that Westerns weren't in fashion at the time, then I think it's a pretty decent film. Alright, I suppose I can see that Scorsese was owed an Oscar for his past films and the competition with Goodfellas that year(even though, I'm not much a fan of that film - I think it's okay, but not deserving of the plaudits it got). I suppose you could say that Dance With Wolves was the more daring film at the time.

By the way, I think that Unforgiven was superb, and that was the best film of the 1990s. That was a masterpiece.

I think it's just a personal opinion on and their faves. This film was a great movie and it still is. The movies you mentioned are great for guys, but not for women. The movie had great actors and did a great job!

I think it’s on par with Goodfellas, but I like Goodfellas a little more. It’s not the worst Best Pic winner, but not the best.

Although I like the film Costner tries too hard at times to make the Indians look like saints and the whites to look like thugs.

It's based off a book and they showed another bad native tribe. How many white or European film have you seen where whites are portrayed as good? But portraying one native tribe as good is just too much I guess. Every other film prior to this portrayed them as bad guys, yet this is what irks you the most.

DWW deserved the Oscar, people just prefer good gangster films over epic Western dramas nowadays.

Personally I never could get far into the movie. I found Kevin Costner's beginning scenes boring. Goodfellas is more interesting.

I think it was better than the mindless violence of the Scorcese movies. Unforgiven was one of the best Westerns ever made.

Dances With Wolves was awesome, a great movie that the political right latched on to as they will do to attack Native Americans. When the right does it the box office and reviews suffer and a chilling effect is in place on doing movies that more accurately depict the American West. Definitely Costner's best role.
