re: In your opinion was this the best sitcom to come out of the UK?

Hi all,

I am a huge One foot in the grave fan. I loved the whole series and I have recently got all the showS and christmas specials of this wonderful comedy show on Dvd.

In 2004, "One Foot in the Grave" was voted by the Uk public as being the 10th most loved comedy show that has ever come out of the Uk?

I totally disagree with that. In my opinion think that the only show that equaled to "One foot in the Grave" was Blackadder; and deserved either number or number 2 position

One the funniest episodes that I have ever seen was when a old lady was being put back into her home from the ambulance taking her there. But the ambulance staff who are responsible for directed her into her home. Have got it wrong, and put her into the wrong home. In fact Victors home and bed eventually.

When his wife(Margaret Meldrew) goes upstairs to get undressed for bed; and the same goes with Victor, the look on his face and his wife was something else. When they see her there in the bed was priceless. You knew it was funny as even the studio audience roared more loudly then I ever heard a studio audience roar before. There have been so many classic situations like that - the wig in the loaf of bread is just another small sample of how funny the situations that Victor seemed to get himself in.

I think that if ever this show was given a full run on USA TV. A proper full run. Even now. It would gain cult status like the "Benny Hill show" did all those years ago.

One foot in the grave is probably the greatest sit com to have ever come out of the Uk. The reason - everyone of us either knows some one like him, or has known someone like him in the past. Where ever you may live on this earth.

Please add your comments to this list if you want. Would love to see your views on this.

Not the best, but one of the best, definitely in the top 5 in my opinion.

Fawlty Towers is better I think.

Better to regret something you did, than something you didn't do!

It's definitely one of the best. Fantastic dialogue and characters. I don't think there's a bad episode.

If you are discussing the history of the British Sitcom and trying to think of the best example there is one program that hasn't been mentioned yet and it is in my Top Three and on occasion I think of it as the best we have ever made. What hampers many sitcoms and dramas is that hey age quite badly and this is how I feel about Only fools and Horses, previously thought of as the best, but it is creaking at the edges now. How often can you watch a program, over and over again even though you know the jokes. I know Fawlty Towers is viewed as classic but do I want to watch it again, right now? No.

The comedies that stand up to multiple re-watching and also feel fresh every time I catch one on a re-run or on the server are few and far between.

The top one for me is "Porridge", it never ages, it never ceases to be funny and I can watch it every single time it is on and laugh as if I had never seen it before and it is 40 years old.

It is in a shifting top three of One foot in the grave and Blackadder. What separates One foot from the others was that the quality was maintained over so many episodes. If I had to watch one episode from one of these three to save my life it would be Porridge Series 01, episode 01 "New Faces Old Hands" the scene in the prison medical centre is priceless. "What, with these feet?"

OFITG just ran on the PBS station in Phoenix (the final episode was yesterday evening). When the series began its run, I decided to watch, not only because I love British comedy in general, but also because I remembered Annette Crosbie as Queen Victoria in Edward the King, and as Henrietta Labouchere in Lillie. While I agree that it's good (the word dramedy comes to mind), it is not my favorite British sitcom. That honor goes to As Time Goes By which, strangely, hasn't been mentioned in this thread.

As for British comedy of the sketch variety (as opposed to sitcoms with continuing plots), Monty Python will always be number one with me. Others on that list would include A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Alas Smith and Jones, and The Two Ronnies.
