Why does everyone in the show hate Hyacinth?
I don't understand.
shareBecouse she was in everyone face!.
shareBecause she annoys them.
shareThey find her obnoxious and overbearing. I don't think they hate her, they just hate her antics.
shareShe is a jumped up woman from the poor end of town who found a better off man to look after her and has never forgiven him for it.
shareThat's an interesting perspective. But I don't think Hyacinth found Richard to "take care of her." That implies a particular motive and I don't sense that with them. She genuinely doesn't seem to realize the expenses involved in her vacations and a country flat.
She doesn't have a head for business, and she holds her end up by taking very good care of their home, donating time and effort to her community, being available to other people, be a doting mother (a bit much, yes, but a mother).
She's not out to use Richard. She's not malicious.

I don't think they "hate" her but find her insufferable, overbearing and a snob.

Hyacinth to me is kinda like Janice off friends - both are really annoying, but everybody still none-the-less knows at their heart they are kind people who will always give a helping hand to their friends/family. The friends, while finding Janice annoying, actually go out of their way never to hurt her feeling either because they still recognise she is a good person. Similiar to Hyacinth.
Half the story lines from the second season onwards where basically involving Hyacinth getting caught up with her families antics but still going in their to help them out even at the risk of embarrassing herself. Remember she could of just turned away and refused to get invoked or told her family never to visit her, but she never did that. Yes there was always a bit of umming-and-aghhing and a few theatrics, but at the end of the day she was there for them. I think that is why her family doesn't hate her. They realize families are messy and contradictory and they are not perfect themselves either.
I admit first season Hyacinth had an edge to her that was thankfully not as noticeably in later seasons (I guess Roy Clarke and Patricia Routledge where still trying to find that happy medium with the character).
I thought this as well that Hyacinth was toned down after that first season.
Hyacinth was pushy and tried to force her standards on others. She was also oblivious to how others felt. That said her intentions were mostly good and she was always willing to help in that respect she wasn't the typical snob.
I don't blame them. She can be quite annoying at times
shareHyacinth isn't unlikable she is just one of those people who just won't leave people alone until she gets what she wants.
shareBecause she never thought that other people were worth listening to. She was good at giving, and did share what she had, but everything was on her own terms with absolutely no concern for what other people did, what they were like, what they might want, or who they were. Other people did not exist in Hyacinth's universe. That's why they didn't like her.
