Totally a 'Fletch' rip off

While Fletch was no all out detective, he did detective work and did it in disquise at times. Same for Harry Crumb....

Fletch came out right around the same time as this film. I liked it and thought it was good to watch. Plus, it was vomical as well.

Movies about inept detectives who don disquises are quite common.

At best, Chevy Chase was playing the exact character he has played in every movie -- and this time his character was doing a Pink Panther imitation.

It was just a popular 80s comedy/action formula.

I forgot to mention that john candy actually wasn't in this. It was Martin Short in a fat suit.

Fletch was about as funny as finding a $hit in your shoe. Both main characters are private eyes but that's pretty much where the similarities end. It's the dynamic of the Harry Crumb character and the way Candy played it which is what makes both films so different.

And if you want an actual rip off, check out Jim Carrey's Liar Liar - it actually lifts the entire climax from this movie with the plane and the air stairs. The most blatant aping in Hollywood history haha. What a joke.

While I am a big fan of this movie, it does mirror Naked Gun, which came out a year earlier, with the dim witted sleuth main character. It even has a scene where Harry is at a rich person's place and he places his hand in an aquarium having his finger in a mouth of a fish and trying to free himself from the fish while not having the rich person finding out about it- a routine that was previously done in Naked Gun...

I spotted that. Would Candy, a comedy icon in his own right and producer of Harry Crumb, really flat out rip off a sequence from a hit comedy that came out the year before??

I want to give him the benefit if the doubt and put it down to coincidence, or both films stealing a classic gag from some older film/sketch and Crumb looking like plagiarism because it came out shortly after.

I really don’t know…

Fletch was only playing dumb to fool those around him. Fletch is actually the smartest guy in the room. Harry Crumb on the other hand is dense and slow-witted.

I think Harry Crumb is more like Inspector Clouseau from The Pink Panther movies. He bumbles and stumbles his way to the correct outcome.
