John Candy's best role?

I've always thought so. He pretty much always played the same kind of character, of course, but the me they were pretty much different versions of Buck.

He was funniest in this but acting wise trains planes and autmobiles was his best, especially the acting he gives when defending himself after Ste Marting rips into him, it's kind of heart-rending.

reply

Agreed, it's that softness about him that made him special.

Buck is one of those movie characters I'd most like to prop up a bar with. Hmm, who else would I want there? Good question, leave it with me...

reply

yeah it was defiantly one of them with out a doubt.

I like all of his movies simply because John is so likable. As far as his best acting, I would have to say "Only the Lonely"(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102598/).

I thought this was John Candy's second best role after Planes, Trains & Automobiles, I can totally relate to the scene where Steve Martin keeps on attacking John Candy in the hotel room scene or the scene where John Candy's character was in the car all by himself while Neil was in a motel room.

Indeed that was a fantastic movie. Steve makes it that much better too.

I think Only the Lonely allowed him to show more range. He really was quite a dynamic actor. I wish he got more "dramedy" roles(and didn't die). I would rate trains planes & automobiles the second best showcase of his ability.

this is his best film that he's the clear lead actor in as there is three films (which i talk about below) that ill remember him the most for but two out of the three films he's basically a co-lead actor.

the films in general ill remember him the most for are...

-Planes Trains & Automobiles (1987) (this he's co-lead actor or slightly more supporting to Steve Martin's character)
-The Great Outdoors (1988) (this he's co-lead with Dan Aykroyd)
-Uncle Buck (1989) (he's the clear lead actor in this film)

I haven't seen Only The Lonely(Which I'll get right on that).

Personally I'd have to say PT&A was his best.
Uncle Buck is a close second.(The characters are so different though it's hard to judge).

Even though it was a smaller role.To me he was extremely entertaining in Rookie Of The Year.

He was also good as Jack Chester in Summer Rental

Love Summer Rental and The Great Outdoors - both are so funny! But, Planes, Trains & Automobiles & Uncle Buck are my personal favorites, and I think, Candy's greatest roles. Because in both films, he shows his heart - he's funny, and an everyman, but he also has scenes that are tender and sad and show more dimention. Like in Uncle Buck when he's talking to the dog about how people used to tell him he had it made b/c he didn't have a wife or a boss or kids, and now nobody says that anymore - who's heart doesn't break for him in that scene?! He had a few scenes like that in Planes too, as somebody else mentioned, when Steve Martin is in the hotel room, and Candy is freezing outside in the car talking to his deceased wife.
