I watched T&H over Xmas in the UK (I'd seen it as a kid) and thought I'd give it another chance. I LOVED it, there are several very funny moments. The slow motion Hooch run at Turner, Hooch wrecking the house and the scene in the car doing the stakeout.
Anybody who saw this years ago should give it another chance. I think I'm gonna buy the DVD (sadly there is no commentary on it).
well, it has got an average rating which is about right since it's an average movie. the 3 mildly funny scenes you described don't make for a top movie. it's the same kinda 80's comedy like The Money Pit. on the other hand, if you enjoyed Turner & Hooch you'll probably like that movie as well.
*spoiler* I saw Hanks on a late night talk show (Jay Leno?) in the early 90's -- he agreed that the film 'tanked' a bit at the Box Office because Hooch meets with an untimely end rescuing the 'Turner' character in the movie's climax. He regretted it - he said that script decision cost him quite a bit of cash since he had a royalty deal on the film based on profits.
however, his ad-lib and interaction with the pooch are very well done -- artful and witty. think about it: he had to carry those scenes: there were only the camera, the dog and him.. the other two don't talk! if you thinks it's easy, try it sometimes.. that's what I appreciate about Hanks - he crafts his characters carefully so that they're believable and well-rounded -- even his supporting roles (That Thing you Do, League of their Own, Catch Me If you Can)..

I knew that stakeout scene in the car had to be ad-libbed! Thanks for confirming. It was brilliant. The rest of the movie was fine -- not bad, not great -- but I've watched it several times just to see that scene again. It was a riot!
Also interesting that Hanks said it didn't do well at the box office because of the decision to kill Hooch.

I personally liked the ending, instead of the cheesy "Aw the world is perfect again" 80s ending it went in another direction, a happy but also melancholy direction.
zider is a lying pro-Uwe Boll douchebag - Note that.
Well, IMDB never rates things as well as they should.
And... the movie is great and all, but I wouldn't make an extreme effort to watch it if I'd never seen it. It's not the kind of movie you see and then go tell your friends about it. But it is a really funny and likable movie with an awesome dog.
I watched it again last night and changed my rating from a six to a seven. This film has a special place in my heart. Also, it looks much better on dvd than the last time i saw it on vhs.
Just saw it for the first time in a long time. It was enjoyable. I assume the film was unedited by the channel. I was shocked to see that the film had 5 writers and 4 or 5 editors. This film didn't have any special effects or anything, so why the need for so many editors? Did they have to call in more to make a deadline to get the film out?
