Tango & Cash - WTF Happened To This Movie?

Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.

For our latest episode we explore the late 80s actioner TANGO & CASH, which stars Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Teri Hatcher, Jack Palance and a dude with a really big chin. The production was a troubled mess that involved rewrites, a new director and all kinds of other issues that made us wonder how it even made it into theaters. Sure, it's a fun enough flick, but man is it a crazy mess chock full of one-liners, explosions, bloody shoot outs and even ends with a freeze frame high five! Seriously, WTF Happened To This Movie?

I watched it for the first time 20 years yesterday.

like i had a vague memory The 1st & 2nd acts were pretty good .

I'd totally forgotten how crazy the ending is - i remembered they borrowed the big truck , but thats it.

I'd forgotton the Main bad guy had built himself a James-bond-villain type "Lair" , using a quarry and a Nitro Circus team.
Complete with "self destruct" mechanism because .. reasons

In the comment section, a YouTuber named aylmer666 typed: "I spoke to one of the writers almost 20 years ago and he told me the only reason Teri Hatcher was cast was because she was the Producer’s girlfriend."

This writer must have been Jeffrey Boam, who previously worked for Jon Peters on Innerspace. Back to Tango & Cash, 1989 was when Teri divorced her husband – Marcus Leithold. Peter MacDonald, one of the executive producers, talked about Daphne Ashbrook no longer going to play Sly’s sister: “I had to reshoot the dance sequence with Teri because they had employed another actress, and then decided it hadn’t worked out.”
