Samuel L. Jackson as 'Black Guy'

Originally, Samuel L. Jackson was credited as "Black Guy." If you have a VHS copy or taped the movie off cable or broadcast, you might see that credit. The credit was changed to "Criminal" for the DVD.

"Criminal" isn't much better. Everybody in the Yankees breakfast scene could be described thusly.

At an end your reign is, and not short enough it was.

The fact is pure comedy.

Sam was just starting out around this time, Coming to America, Sea of Love, Exorcist 3, Jungle Fever, but, when he started to get bigger roles, then he had main roles with names instead of 'Black Guy'. I was shocked to see him in this movie and very shocked that he wasn't in the main credits, but, he wasn't a big name, yet.

What about White Chicks or White Men Can't Jump are these not racist titles?

reply

Do you feel Samuel L. Jackson was typecast as 'Black Guy'?

reply

Looking back on it, if he could laugh at it, seeing how he's come since then, I don't know. As a black man, I can understand why it seems racist. Maybe instead of "Black Guy", he could've been 'criminal in hat' I don't know.

Maybe people are offended because they'd rather Black people be looked at as human beings instead of being looked at as just some "colored person".

I'd call him "What's the bad news guy" but that's too long for the type size they used in the credits.

reply

He's black and he's a guy so I fail to see the problem unless, of course, you have a problem with accuracy. Some people are easily offended and others go out of their way to be offended.

reply

What if they credited him as "Black Criminal"?

reply

Really shocked this thread was made 1o years ago. You were ahead of your overly politically correct time, OP. Bravo.

just watched this movie on Showtime. he's credited as "black guy". love it. i thought he portrayed his character wonderfully. they originally wanted C.Thomas Howell to play "black guy" because of his performance in the movie Soul Man, in which he plays a black guy, but nobody plays a black guy like Samuel L. Jackson plays a black guy.

reply

Damn, he was skinny in this movie. They could have called him Skinny guy.

reply

At least he was credited. Most extras aren't credited in movies.
