Hidden message in movie about the company you keep

Throughout the movie, Trotter is witnessed to the real nature of his "friends" from the track. Not that they are all losers and crappy gamblers, but they have a loser's mentality.

They actually hate when Trotter wins the first bet.

Eventhough he's having the greatest day anyone could have at the track...they are waiting for him to fail...

When he shows he's not going to lose, they bring up his mistakes in the past, ie the rat-hole story...

He really surrounded himself around the wrong kind of people.

That happens all the time, everyone loves an underdog but don’t like them winning too often.

They all start rooting for him and ultimately support him at the end though.

I see it as Trotter was a cab driver and as a gambler he hung around other similar folk. As gambling addicts, they all get jealous of whoever hits a hot streak, in this case it's Trotter. Note that even Trotters new found "friends" in the clubhouse also got pretty upset when he hit it big.
In the end, Trotter is such a lovable loser his non clubhouse friends stick with him and admire him when he takes ALL his winnings and "Let it Ride"!
