Yeah right, so a flaccid punk Whinielle who has no rank nor studied at an accredited karate school "scores" a single point in a single match and all of a sudden he's declared the winner of the whole tournament?
Barnes faced a gauntlet and he scored a dozen points on Whinielle and only got a single hit on him because he saw his opponent break out into a hallucinogenic dance and dropped his guard to attempt to escort Whinielle off the mat to give him some shred of dignity.
No way Whinielle walked out of that tournament with his golden trophy without getting jumped.
No, what's laughable is that anyone could successfully hold a tournament where the defending champion gets a bye straight to the final. Also what's laughable is that anyone other than said defending champion would even enter such a tournament.
The result itself is down to the script.
The point is that no sober person could view the Whinielle v. Barnes "fight" (I use the term fight loosely.... it was more like a beating) and call LaPusso the winner with a straight face.
I mean think about it when Whinielle was given the second trophy do you think he started boasting in the shower like he did in KK2? Did he stop and give autographs to fans?
I think not. Instead he sulked out of the gym with his head hanging down by his ankles because he knew that he received the beating of his life publicly and had a nervous breakdown and only "won" on some BS technicality.
What's with all of the weird nickname usage.? It's kind of difficult to tell who you're talking about. "Whinielle" in particular isn't the best nickname. It just kind of looks like like you're talking about some random French guy who I don't remember being in the movie.
In all seriousness though it's been many years since I've seen this really bad sequel and I truly hate how the film inexplicably turns Daniel back into a wimp being bullied again. His "victory" at the end was indeed a complete joke. It was such a strange creative decision to have things play out like they did by depicting Daniel as a hapless wimp who sh!ts his pants (after winning a no holds barred death match in the previous film no less) and gets completely curb stomped by a guy who cleans out the entire tournament. He's somehow declared the winner after scoring one measly point after Barnes had been dominating & toying with him. That's some really "heroic" ending there....
Indeed Daniel should have felt ashamed after such a lame "victory".
He won because of three things.
Barnes failed to follow Silvers plan at the end (get the point, get the point).
The 'rules' of the competition always gave a person (however much of a beating they may have taken) the possibility of winning even when scoring no points.
Finally, and this is the most important reason, the script called for it.
As Threadkiller (post below) states, the whole movie makes little sense when you consider what has happened in the previous movie.
What do you think would have happened if the match had gone on for 1 additional round after Whinielle flipped Barnes?
If you notice Whinielle DID flip Barnes in Miyagay's garden earlier in the film. However Barnes quickly recovered and Whinielle was on his back with Barn's foot on his throat just moments later.
I suspect the same thing would have happened if the match went on for another round.
Whinielle relied on a Hail Mary fake-out shot and the clock running out saved his (flaccid) ass.
I think if Barnes had wanted to he could have finished the fight in thirty seconds without even going to sudden death in the first place never mind an extra round.
I guess the 2 main takeaways from the fight was this:
1.) Whinielle's Karate really was shit because he got utterly dominated by Barnes.
2.) Whinielle's teacher Miyagay really was a phony and a fake setting Whinielle up for failure by doing warm up tai-chi instead of real karate.
Here is a good example of a Whinielle v Barnes type of fight basically a phony champion against a real fighter:
Did you lose money on the Barnes/LaRusso fight? You seem to be taking Barnes' loss pretty personally lol. But Mr. Miyagi (do you seriously think calling him Miyagay is clever?) was not a phony considering he single-handedly beat Barnes, Kreese, and Silver in a fight.
Hollywood has long perpetuated martial arts myths and the Karate Kid films are no exception. I'm a fan of these movies because I don't allow myself to take them too seriously.
Ummm because everyone dies...did anything in the Karate Kid movies indicate Miyagi was going to live forever? A central element of part 2 was him dealing with his father's death. And it's Miyagi....grow up dude.
The final fight in part 3 was handled incredibly poorly and as pointed out earlier in this thread made little sense considering what took place in parts 1 and 2. But it doesn't change the fact that in these movies Miyagi was able to take down anyone who comes at him, so not a phony.
The point is that Miyagay was not invincible... he was just a frail old man who got his rocks off beating up children (Johnny et. al) and giving alcohol to children before having them tuck him into bed.
Miyagay also got whacked HARD on the back in KK2 his slow ass didn't see that coming did it? And Silver & Kreese spared him at 1/2 pace in KK3... would YOU go full stop against an old senile perverted little man like Miyagay?
