2nd best indy film
Fact, solid 8 out of 10
shareIt's my personal favourite, mostly because of the interplay between Indy and his father. This one seems to have more heart than all of the other ones, including Raiders. I feel Spielberg is more confident with the actions sequences than he was with the first film (although that's one of the aspects I do think the underrated, IMHO, Temple of Doom deserves a lot of credit for), and he seems to have a clearer grasp of the characters (it wasn't always clear who the bad guy was in Raiders, besides the Nazis as an overall force of evil; Belloq occasionally seemed as if he was about to switch sides, whereas Donovan is hissible from the moment he's revealed as the 'Big Bad'), particularly with respect to Brody and Sallah (yes, they're played more for laughs here, but that gives them a certain purpose within the film's structure).

I go with Raiders because it was so innovative and the first in the franchise, but truth be known, if both were on two different networks at the same time, I'd be inclined to watch Last Crusade. It is an absolutely terrific film, not just as a sequel but on its own. I think if it was released first it would have been just as big a hit as the original.
I take your point. Raiders is probably the better film *objectively* simply because it was the first/an original concept, but, like you, I get more of a kick out of Crusade (for all the various reasons I listed), and I do feel that Spielberg's direction is more confident (if that makes sense; not that Spielberg was lacking for confidence back in 1981, although, Raiders did come immediately after one of his few flops, '1941').
share"2nd best Indy film" I agree with you
shareDefinitely. You know what's NOT the 2nd best, and never was?
Temple. 🤣
Temple has the best action scenes and the best opening sequence.
Also, as much as everyone decries Willie Scott, Kate Capshaw arguably had the best chemistry with Harrison Ford out of all the leading ladies.
Sure.
But it's not in the top half of Indy films. 🤣
Everyone sees this differently I suppose. I didn't think Capshaw had all that much chemistry in this, more than Elsa in III certainly, but much less than Marion IMO.
Temple's opening sequence is pretty good.
Marion is a great character, but I honestly think the chemistry between Willie and Indy had more zip, and the interplay is akin to that between Indy and his dad in The Last Crusade.
Also, and it wasn't a point I was consciously thinking of when I first saw Raiders, the relationship between Indy and Marion is a bit icky, seeing as she was only a girl when he first dated her. These days, that would be regarded as 'grooming'. The relationship between Indy and Willie, by contrast, felt like one between two adults, albeit one who was a bit of a spoiled, screaming brat.
I like it almost as much as the original. I am in the minority not liking Temple of Doom.

Most Raiders fans put the deuce behind I and III, but do you really not like it or just don't think it's as good as the first and third? I put II quite behind the first and third like most but think on its own is a fabulous film that would have done well without being a sequel.
Like I can't stand watching it at all. I think the action scenes are meh. I can't stand Short Round or Willie. Everything about it is just to me inferior to the 1st and 3rd.
shareVisually, Raiders remains the best Indy film, and the truck chase is the best action scene in the series.
But purely from an entertainment perspective, from start to finish, Last Crusade is my favourite. It's the funniest and fastest paced in the series, and Sean Connery as Indy's dad isn't just a great addition, he's Indy's best sidekick. For me, Connery steals the show.
Furthermore, it's the only one in the franchise that throws everything but the kitchen sink into the mix - a train, a ship, a tank, motorbikes, speedboats, planes... it has the lot, and it adds to the fun and makes each action scene distinctive.
And a zeppelin!
i find all 3 original indy film are equal enjoy
raiders - interesting storys. great opener.
temple - fresh story in different part of world and new unique atmosphere from original
crusade - similar to raiders but lot of great action
This is easily the best film. Raiders is brilliant, but it has a few clunky scenes, especially in the back end, where the narrative just starts leaping forward from scene to scene without much cohesion or logic. Whereas Crusade feels like a sweeping epic where each scene serves another and it all ties together wonderfully as a complete tale. The tradeoff is a bit of silliness and perhaps some unwelcome humor for some. But in terms of film production and writing and stunts and logistics and all that stuff, Crusade is easily the best.
shareThis. Last Crusade is the best, pretty much a perfect film but for a couple of overly ambitious effects shots.
You’re right about Raiders losing steam in the latter half, the boat and sub stuff isn’t great. Picks up afterwards of course. Of the Trilogy, while Raiders deserves max respect for being the first, I actually put it last.
In second place is Temple for it’s incredible opener, real sense of peril (especially when the ceiling is coming down), relentless groundbreaking action scenes, and deal-with-it-kids boundary pushing violence.
Let’s be clear though - all three are masterpieces.
It’s a great movie. Wish the green screen tech had been better but it was brand new at the time.
First movie to drop the THX intro at the start, people cheered.
