Why do you think this movie doesn't get a lot of respect?

I'll start by saying that I hold this movie in pretty high regard. Now, I don't think it's Shawshank or The Dark Knight by any means, but I would put it up there with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Goonies (heck, I'd rather watch this than The Goonies).

This movie isn't nearly as talked about or remembered as it should be. I think it should definitely be remembered as an 80s classic. It's funny, intense, and for its time, great special effects. It was such an epic movie for its era and I just think it deserves higher than a measly 6.3. IMO, it should at least have a solid 7.

What do you all think?

I know a lot of people who talk about this movie with a lot of respect. I sat down to watch it once with my then seven year old daughter. She was in awe.

Maybe I just don't know that many people :)

It seems to still have been a classic back in the 90s. Maybe it's because it's got a lot of special effects that are kind of dated and it's more targeted at kids than adults?

Next year is the 30th anniversary. I hope someone commemorates that in some way.

I think because the concept is too brainy for the LMCD (Lowest Mental Common Denominator, AKA, idiots) crowd. Plus, most people have forgotten it in the past 25 years. Not to mention that the sequels they made afterwards stunk.
