I wish the new movie didn't exist.

I really do.
Why? It's an awful movie, a pure cash in but it has absolutely zero effect on anything that came before it. It doesn't take away any enjoyment you get from the originals in any possible way.
Would everyone have preferred a 3rd movie that was actually good? Yes! Luckily for you the real 3rd movie exists, it's a video game for Xbox 360, ps3 and PC and it's fantastic, has the original cast, fleshes out the mythos and ties neatly in with the first movie.

So it's approximately thirty years after their dealing with Vigo. The Ghostbusters are still around but ghost activity isn't what it used to be. Without an "alpha spirit" like Gozer or Vigo to stir them up ghosts have become relatively peaceful. The Ghostbusters get maybe a dozen cases a year, a lot of them internationally, most of them wind up being false alarms or out and out frauds. That said, the few legit cases they do get have caused them to be classified as a necessary public service and entitle them to federal funding which keeps them afloat.
Egon had passed away several years earlier and Winston has retired and started a family (although he still keeps in touch). They've attempted to bring in new people over the years but none have stuck around except for Kylie. Formerly Egon's prized pupil, she has multiple degrees in paranormal studies and has basically replaced Egon as their resident mad scientist. The team is basically Ray, Peter and Kylie. And also Janine, who still serves as their secretary, who has never completely gotten over Egon's sudden death.
The movie opens with a young man arriving at the firehouse asking to speak to Peter. Janine initially treats him in her normal acerbic way until he finally introduces himself as Oscar Barrett, Dana's son. Suddenly Janine is thrilled to see him and immediately gets Peter to see him. While talking to Peter we discover that Dana passed away from cancer about a year earlier and on her death bed she revealed the truth to Oscar - Peter is his real father. At first Peter is shocked and attempts to run, but then stops and rethinks things and decides he wants to be apart of Oscar's life.
FYI, it's also available on the Wii. I picked it up at a bargain bin. This version has worse graphics. But I think the cartoonish look is an upgrade, giving it less of an "uncanny valley" problem. Still features the same story & the original movie's voice actors. It also allows you to play through the campaign with 2 players in split screen mode.
shareI wish Ghostbusters II didn't come out either. It should have just been left alone. While II isn't a terrible film it did cheapen the original. Sometimes a concept just needs to be one and done. No remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, rehashes or spin offs.
shareI liked the new movie more than I liked "Ghostbusters II".
shareWell looks like the next one in the series is going to rectify that error by ignoring it.
