I have had two pugs in my lifetime, one I had for 13 years and another one I just got last year. When I had my first pug Twinkle nobody knew what a pug was. [this was 1986 thereabouts] Most people who took the time to approach us about her asked if she was a potbelly pig. Pbs were really popular in Washington D.C. at that time but come on....it has a curly tail but it is so not a pig!
Pugs are attention whores and they are known to be very mischevious. They will chew on ANYTHING. Seriously...anything. I know of a pug who was the dogchild of an archeologist who ate some acient pottery shards while out on a dig with him. They presumed they were stolen until the dog started pooping clay with little chunks in it. Seriously...these little guys are chewers. They go through bones meant to last hours in mere minutes. If you get a pug be prepared for it to chew your belongings and to provide it with MANY things to chew on.
That said chewing is their worst flaw. They are very loving little dogs and they have wonderful bouncy personalities...at times. Pugs are either on or off. When they are off they will flop around and sleep for hours but when they are on they will run around in circles around your house. Most pugs are very social and *love* people. My little pug I have now Trojan loves people he knows but he is ultra shy! This is rare in pugs, they are usually quiet gregarious, but once Trojan gets used to someone everytime they come about again he freaks out with glee! They really hate to be alone [dogs are pack animals afterall!] so you'll find lots of pug owners end up being the people who take there dog everywhere. Getting a second pug can help when they need to be left alone but two pugs is asking for mischief. I have almost always had another dog when I've had a pug but never two pugs at once. Right now I have a pug and a Chihuahua [now theres a dog that HATES to be left alone] and they get along swimingly. In fact I've never seen a pug who did not adore other dogs but I suppose they exist.
And yes...both my pugs LOVE cats. They will play with cats as sure as they will play with dogs...the problem is finding a cat that will put up with it :)
