This movie is so..... boring?

I got a DVD with both the Special edition and the original version of this film. I had never seen it before, so I decided to watch the theatrical version first.
I am currently 82 minutes into this 137 minute film.
I AM SO BORED!!!!!!!!

I know that some people love this film, but at the moment, I truly can't see why. Typically, I don't walk out in the middle of a movie, but this is really pushing it.

I can't imagine sitting through a 170 minute cut of this film!!

Edit 02/03/2016-
It has been five years since I posted this, and for some reason, of all the asinine BS I posted to this account when I was 16, this post continues to garner attention. I am far more well versed when it comes to movies than I was five years ago, and I suspect that I will have a lot more to say about this movie now than I did then.

I will be re-watching The Abyss this weekend. I intend to finish it this time, and will update this post with my thoughts.

Well! I don't wanna say that this is a case of a younger generation with a garbage attention span. I don't, but...Maybe if they threw in some more gunfire and some rap music?

I have to agree with the sentiment of the OP (I came here from a Google search to see if others found it boring like I did). Probably exacerbated by the fact that I watched the 170 minute version, but I found it so dull I had to give up in the middle. I ended up finishing it a week later though.

For the first two thirds the contrived characters sit around talking melodramatically and floating, and if you can make it through all that something marginally interesting finally happens near the end. But in retrospect I didn't find it worth watching.

reply

That is certainly not true

Hands down one of the most atmospheric movies ever. Sort of reminded me of Dead Space and Bioshock too. Loved it and feels like I've missed out on this gem all these years.

reply

If this is "boring," you people need to see more movies. For Christ's sake, ever see Barry Lyndon or Lawrence of Arabia... all just as successful and brilliant in their use of cinematography??

reply

HAHAH;-D OP watching Lawrence of Arabia?!!?! OH MY GOD!

But then again, can follow, a bit.. why spend 30-45 min. to learn about someone - who'll die anyway?

Then again: Aliens(45min+ before action) and this one..

Guess, I'm a sucker for 'slow' action movies..

OP: Superhero movies and Michael Bay is for you;-D

reply

Oh I get it...Atmospheric...

PUNS!

that's why people seem bright,

The Godfather is beyond boring and many rank it #1 of all movies. And no movies can touch the boredom level of 2001: a Space Odyssey, Brick, or The Player.

reply

I love sci-fi and had high expectations for this movie but it turned out to be real snoozefest.

reply

Moon(2009) ACTIONFEST?

reply

So? Have you re-watched yet?

reply

I'm personally just about to watch the 171min edition. Better be good. And FYI posters, just because you enjoy a film like this, it doesn't make you smarter than others. Thinking so (and from what I've seen on this thread is very much the case) only makes you an arrogant douche. It is actually possible to enjoy multiple genres and films y'know.

reply

hmmmm well, I'd recommend NOT watching the long verion. Just makes it longer (slower), and preachier. Works best as the short cut, with the long one THERE for historical reference as the directors cut.

Just seems weird to see THIS action packed, roller coaster ride of a movie listed as "boring". Everyone is different though.

Normally, I like re-watching those films that everyone loves but I didn't like because I like giving at least two opportunities to those great films that I don't appreciate as they deserve. Specially, I like re-watching films I watched and hated years ago without knowing the first thing about cinema, since I believe I'm always learning.

But at the moment, after watching a fair amount of movies (much more than the regular folks, not enough to be considered a ''film buff'') both bad and good. I kind of trust my judgement and I'm not sure The Abyss is worth a second opportunity.

It's not that I hated it. But I found its pseudo-science annoying and unbelievable, and I thought the good-aliens-bad-military is really cliched and unoriginal now. However, I can see how 28 years ago it was a good film and can understand why people like it.

Now, I don't think I should re-watch The Abyss and I find it hard I will ever change my opinion about it. But since, according to your edit, you decided to give it another watch, I was wondering if maybe I should do the same. So after re-watching it, did you like it? Did you found it worthy of a second watch?
