Officers you've thought were jerks on COPS?

The one officer I've thought was a total prick was Joe Frentess from Des Moines, IA (Season 14), he was the officer who pulled over a young male and his buddies for a minor traffic violation and while dealing with the perps he was being a total jerk the whole time yet the perps were trying to be as kind and respectful towards him, I think that was the only episode he appeared in.

There's this really old episode with this cop who was really tall and skinny. He looked like he was probably 19-20. Anyway, he was breaking up this fight at a grocery store and he was being EXTREMELY rude to the black woman for no reason. He told her "Shut your mouth" like five times and just had a really pissy attitude. I noticed in the older episodes cops tended to be a lot more brash and aggressive :/

Around what era did this episode take place, I'm not sure if I recall seeing this episode or not which is quite odd to me because I am familiar with many of the older episodes.

Haha, I finally stumped you with one :P

Ok I found it, Its season 4 episode 29. Yeah he was extremely loud and aggressive for a skinny white kid LOL. Lookin' at this guy you'd have no idea he could be so mean. Damn he's even wearing braces...I'm guessing he's fresh out of the academy but then in the beginning the were saying he's being promoted to homicide and they brought him a birthday cake and told him he needed to eat more xD

I don't get how old they're supposed to be to join the force. i thought it was 21 across the board but i remember an episode where the guy said his parents had to buy his ammunition or gun for him because he wasn't old enough when he started the job.

reply

Gosh I wish I have a strong memory of the episode you've mentioned about the cop being promoted to homocide and them buying a birthday cake but I do remember the final episode of Season 4 Episode 29 where they've raided a major drug dealer's home overlooking the Miami Beach very well and remember how difficult it was for me to watch that episode due to seeing a drug dealer's home, money, vehicles and other belongings getting confiscated by the police

reply

Yeah that was a REALLY nice house, the same one they filmed Scarface in. How coincidental. Dude was a major drug dealer for sure.

reply

i thought it was really cool how they've did a drug raid on a house where they've filmed Scarface at, I agree he was a major drug dealer, I wonder how much prison time he ended up getting, I bet he was looking at least a minimum of 10 years in prison

reply

I think that was the episode the police found a cross with police handcuffs on it. Whoever owned it felt it would ward off the police. It didn't work.

reply

I do remember a pair of police handcuffs found at a drug house where they filmed Scarface at.

A lot of them...

There's this cop in the latest episodes who looks like The Rock and he's always an @sshole...usually for no reason. I hate watching segments with him in it.

That would be Yariel Mata from Pinnelas County, Florida, I also don't like him very much either and thought he was a bit of a prick, I especially hated the way he was acting towards the suspect who was interrupting him in the episode where they've found crack cocaine with the perp's medication and he claims his mother put the crack in the baggie filled with pills, then the police calls the suspect's mother to arrive on the scene.

reply

Yeah! That's him. Yeah I can't handle that episode. He sure has an attitude.

Its really weird seeing you reference new cops because usually you're always posting about the old ones haha. I think this is like the first time I've seen you talk about a modern generation cop O_o

I didnt think you watched the newer episodes but It's good you're still watching.

reply

I occasionally would watch a newer episode now and then but the episode where a guy accused his mother of putting the crack cocaine along with his medication was one of the most interesting episodes I've ever seen, I thought Yariel Mata got on my nerves in that episode for not letting the suspect continue on with what he wanted to say although the suspect was lying about something, I wish he would have been more patient dealing with this criminal.

How did you feel about the criminal trying to incriminate his mother with the crack cocaine?

reply

I thought that was pretty screwed up! Pretty scummy thing to do...though it couldve been the truth?

*beep* like him deserve to be shot in the face.

I'm sure a good number of cops being filmed "turn it up" for the camera but this guy almost seemed like he was auditioning for his own reality show. And he practically got one, they did at least 2 episodes (Jersey Cop 1 & 2) devoted solely to him, he's in Jersey episodes as well as popping up in Coast to Coast episodes. He must be popular with others given the amount of screen-time devoted to him and the episodes seem to disproportionately show up in reruns but I cringe when he "gets going".

I roll my eyes every-time he proclaims "fiddy bags o' dope" on multiple episodes where what is shown seems to be quite different amounts. I think a good cop is a listener and keeps everyone calmed, this guy is too busy snapping wise-cracks and being antagonistic. He comes off as an over-the-top cartoony stereotype "Joisey tough guy" character and while that might be funny(?) on TV if that's how he is when the camera isn't rolling, I think I would hate dealing with him even if I weren't a perp.

Another police officer who I've thought was a bit of an ass was Johnathon Chambers from Chattanooga, Tennessee (Season 14), there was one episode where he kicked a drunken male in the groin while trying to get him to hold still and cooperate.

reply

Another officer I've thought was a total douche was Tony 'Scott' Villarreal-Dowlearn from Houston, Texas, he appeared in the recent episodes from Houston, Texas and he was the police officer who did a routine stop on a stolen pickup truck with a middle aged black male inside, while the officer was ordering the suspect to get out of the vehicle he complied to his commands although at a slower pace and he went ballistic on the suspect, Officer Dowlearn strikes me as someone who doesn't know how to be calm in intense, stressful situations.

As much as I appreciate you voicing your redress. Please understand these episode are and have to be heavily edited. They only have 6 minutes to tell the story. On that particular scene what you dont see is the gun and meth pipe on the console. What you didnt hear was I was on the original stolen vehicle report three days earlier. If you re watch the episode there are several indicators of noncompliance including him only placing one hand on the vehicle while looking back smiling. My closest back up was 20 minutes away running priority 1. From the time I called out one at gun point to one in custody about 11 and a half minutes elapsed the majority of that was a ground fight that was cut from the segment. The video also does show a great size comparison this gentleman's arms were bigger than my thighs. The reason for the prompt action of trying to detain him was warranted due to me being a one man unit with no back up with two civilians on my scene that I was responsible for the safety of. I was not able to clear the vehicle prior to the gentleman waking up and had no idea if there was anyone in the backseat. This could've went south really fast for both him and me. Please know that I got into law enforcement to be the change I wanted to see.

I grew up on the east side of houston where I was one of 3 white kids from elementary all the way through high school. I won the National Minority Leadership award (non law enforcement) two years in a row for my work in advocacy for minorities. Even while a police officer I've attended and support BLM rallies and marches.

I actually am really calm in stressful situations. I have been in far worse situations while on Active Duty deployments in the military. If I wasn't I would've been out of control and dispatch would not be able to understand me. Notice my verbal commands were loud and agressive but my radio communication was clear calm and collected.
It is unfortunate that we snap to quick judgements without the facts.

You made some really great points there. I had no idea there was a gun and meth involved. When you're in an area where your backup may be miles away, you have to be quick on your feet. I know those COPS segments are edited for time for obvious reasons. I understand your point of view. I'd love to hear more stories from officers featured on the show. Thanks for your service.

I do appreciate everything you've done for the community, I know being a police officer is not an easy feat, especially in a major city like Houston, I was a total complete different person when I've made this post back in 2016 than I am today, I've just got done watching the segment and I thought the suspect was totally intense with the way he was acting while not being compliant, I agree he was a big guy, he definitely had some issues for not wanting to be compliant other than the fact that he's likely going back to prison for violating his parole, him being in a stolen vehicle and assaulting on a police officer, I don't get why they didn't show the gun and the meth in his vehicle, that would've been very interesting to see.

I do enjoy the other segment you appeared in with the guy who tossed out the marijuana in the bushes, I thought the suspect in that segment made a fool of himself since the amount of marijuana that he had was a misdemeanor, if I were the suspect in that segment I would've just accepted my punishment knowing I'll be getting off with a misdemeanor which is less severe than risking a felony charge.

If you're still a police officer patrolling the streets, you be safe out there and thank you for everything that you do.

Another officer I've thought was a jerk was a Hispanic cop from Houston who arrested 2 young males for pills (the driver also had a warrant), I've thought the officer was being threatening and disrespectful towards the suspects despite them being semi cooperative towards the cop, I'm surprised he didn't call for backup considering there were 2 suspects in the vehicle, I'm not sure which season this episode was because I've seen it on COPS Reloaded.

reply

I thought Jeff Lower from Palm Beach County, Florida can be a bit of an ass, he didn't seem to be too bad in the Season 11 episodes but he seemed to be more of a jerk in the Season 14 and 16 episodes.
