I finally figured out who Phillip reminded me of. He resembled Richard Carpenter from classic pop duo The Carpenters.

Philip! oh god, he is so cantankerous! when alice came to pick them up from the airport they are sitting there reading their books like they are at the library and as jan and alice are walking and talking he is continuously trying to interject himself into the conversation and it just isn't working. he goes back to his book. while walking.
