Who would you have chosen to play Barry Champlain...

...if Oliver Stone didn't have Eric Bogosian reprise his role from the play?

My pick: Jeff Goldblum.

reply

Jeff would be good. For me its either Michael Beck or else your pick would be cool to see.

Not in any particular order:

- Denis Leary
- Sam Kinnison (If he was alive)
- Kevin Spacey
- Joe Mantegna
- Alec Baldwin

reply

Sam Kinison WAS still alive in '88. He died in the nineties, and he would've been awesome.

I could maybe see Jack Nicholson or Dennis Hopper in that role.

reply

This was Bogosian's baby, he was on the project before Stone came onto the project. I don't think anybody else could have done such a good job with that role as Bogosian did.

But just for speculation, I'll say these guys would have been great

- James Woods
- John C. McGinley (who's also in this film)
- Harry Dean Staunton
- Dustin Hoffman

reply

Seconded for James Woods

I can't imagine anyone greater than Eric Bogosian in the role. He is untouchable. But if I had to pick another actor to give it a whirl, I wouldn't mind seeing Alan Rickman take a stab at it.

I second Piven as a good choice if the film was remade.

Also:

Robert Downey Jr
Sam Rockwell

After seeing Sean Penn practically morph into Harvey Milk, I'd say he'd be a great choice. I also second Robert Downey Jr.

Bogosian was awesome. But I can see Denis Leary doing a great job.
