Dustin Hoffman

great acting man

reply

I agree! Dustin Hoffman was amazing in this film!

reply

ALMOST MAKES ME FORGET CRUISE IS SHIT GRINNIN' HIS WAY THROUGH THE PICTURE NEXT TO HIM.

reply

Cruise is the heart of the movie, it doesn't work without him.

reply

I WOULD DISAGREE....YOU COULD RECAST THE CRUISE ROLE WITH AT LEAST A DOZEN OTHER ACTORS OF THE TIME AND IT WOULD STILL BE THE MODERN CLASSIC IT HAS BECOME....THE HOFFMAN ROLE IS WHAT THE FILM AND ITS NARRATIVE HINGES ON AND ITS A ONE OF A KIND ICONIC PERFORMANCE.๐Ÿ™‚

reply

I don't think you could recast Cruise that easily. A classic is a classic for a reason, it means everything came together just right. Cruise is the main character and the one that you empathize with.

AL PACINO,GENE HACKMAN,EITHER OF THE ESTEVEZ BOYS,MEL GIBSON,CHARLES GRODIN,NIC CAGE,SEAN PENN,TIM ROBBINS,JOHN CUSACK...OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.๐Ÿ™‚

EDIT...ROBIN WILLIAMS WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT OPPOSITE HOFFMAN AFTER THINKING ABOUT IT.

reply

Nic Cage? Lmao. You're just naming a bunch of actors, you don't know if any of them would've had the same chemistry with Hoffman.

I can say the same about Hoffman's character - Pacino, De Niro, Hackman all could've played an autistic savant if they wanted.

reply

LMAO...AL PACINO

OK GUY...WOW.

reply

Pacino is a far better actor than Hoffman.

reply

IN THAT ROLE?...LAUGHABLE IS THE WORD THAT SPRINGS TO MIND.

reply

Easily if he wanted. Laughable is the thought of Nic Cage in this movie hamming it up.

reply

THIS IS NIC CAGE 30 YEARS AGO...BIRDY,LEAVING LAS VEGAS...

reply

Leaving Las Vegas only worked because he's shit faced drunk in every scene so he can ham it up. He wouldn't have worked in Rain Man at all.

reply

IM SURE YOUR RIGHT...HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING๐Ÿ™‚

reply

ok now i want to ssee Al Pachino as Charlie Babbit. That would be a trip.

Agree. Hoffman was astounding in this. The degree of difficulty of Ray's character is off the charts, or at least a ten. Literally anyone could have played Charlie if they were the right age and male. Cruise is a decent actor, but the degree of difficulty for Charlie is less than three on a scale of ten.

Take Hoffman out, the film is a joke. Take Cruise out, the film still wins 5 Oscars.

reply

Disagree completely. Hoffman's character is practically a prop in the movie, you can't empathize with him at all. A difficult performance sure, but you need the Cruise character to empathize with. A performance being more difficult does not mean it's more important.

reply

NOBODY EMPATHIZES WITH THE CRUISE CHARACTER...HES A SELFISH ASSHOLE.

reply

You see, at least you actually feel some way about him. I empathized with him because his father was clearly an asshole and slighted Tom in the will.

With Hoffman, he's just an autistic savant. You can't really feel one way or the other about him. He could've been played by a De Niro or a Pacino just fine.

reply

I SIMPLY SO NOT AGREE...OH WELL๐Ÿ™‚

reply

Hoffman's character is practically a prop in the movie,

Wow.

reply

You don't empathize with Hoffman, you empathize with Cruise. Hoffman's character is a tool for the story, the movie starts and ends with Cruise for a reason.

reply

Actually, I have to say that I emphatize more with Raymond since I'm autistic too.

reply

That's great that you did but no offense, i'm talking about the general audience.

reply

This! It is not fair to even make a comparison.
