Tom Cruise is subpar in this movie.

I can't be the only one who thinks that Tom Cruise was not good in this movie. He got on my nerves more so than anything. The only other one that was worse was his girlfriend.

Dustin Hoffman made this movie great.

Tom Cruise is absolutely superb in this movie. And if for some really strange reason you weren't convinved about his acting skills by 1988, you neededn't question anymore when 'Born on the Fourth of July ' came out the following year.

This was the man who gave us the legendary performance of Les Grossman, man. DIET COKE!!!

Tom Cruise was excellent! It was hilarious watching him lose his patience. How he seamlessly transforms from a selfish yuppy to a caring brother by the latter part of the movie is a testament to Cruise's acting range.

I thought Tom Cruise was great in this movie, and highly underrated. ...I will admit the girlfriend and her accent got on my nerves.

Not only was Cruise very good in this, but I thought he & Hoffman had chemistry together. His character in this was somebody with a lot of stress & everything....mostly negative....going on at once in his life & being a guardian to his brother too. A person could be forgiven for being annoying under the circumstances.

I think Hoffman had the easy part, and he won an award, cruise's part was more difficult, he had to play a normal person with a lot of hangups,
he sorta carried hoffman on his back through the whole movie.
he certainly had more pages to read for this part, hoffman's part could have been played by any good actor
I thought cruise was the whole movie, he played the part very well.
he looked confused, bewildered, irritated, puzzeled, it was just a great
acting job and he made hoffman look good,
but hoffman got the award, go figure.

I have to disagree here. It must have been a hundred times harder to play Raymond part than to play Charlie. I'm not saying, that Tom Cruise wasn't good. This and "The last samurai" are his best two movies, in my opinion. But there's no way, that Dustin Hoffman got the easier part to play. Charlie was pretty much just a normal guy. Tom didn't have to do much to play that part convincingly. Almost any male movie star at the time could have played the role. On the other hand, Raymond was an autistic savant, and not every actor could have played that part as convincingly as Dustin Hoffman did.

Yes, it's true! IMDB has reached Sweden!

Tom Cruise was great in this movie. There was a character growth in his role as Charlie Babbit.

Dustin Hoffman is one of my favorite performers and he is fantastic in this film. I think most actors would find the Tom Cruise role more challenging though. Hoffman has so much more to work with playing Raymond. If you were to read the script and were asked which role you would rather play, I'm sure most people would want to play the autistic savant. It is more interesting and it requires you to leave yourself completely. Charlie just has to be ordinary and unremarkable, yet still be a dynamic character. He doesn't have the odd ticks and the out of the ordinary dialogue to work with. It is all Charlie's journey. He bears the burden of the film. It's like being the straight man in a comedy routine. You don't get the punchlines, but without you no one is laughing.

Here, I disagree with you and agree with the original quote.

Tom Cruise is the one who had to make a change in character. He's the one who had to go from bitterness to acceptance. The entire success of the movie depended on the believability of his transition. Dustin Hoffman played a good part, but it was less complicated.

Jack: Trustworthy.

I thought Tom Cruise was fantastic in this movie as the typical yuppy of the times. He was so selfish and self-centered. He acted the part prefectly.

reply

I thought he acted the part superbly ("high degree of excellence"). His character was supposed to be annoying, and then he changed for the good.

Tom Cruise was excellent in this movie as he is in most of his movies

I agree. Tom Cruise's performance was carried by Dustin Hoffman. I think the problem is that he couldn't give us the emotional access needed for the character. I sympathised greatly with Raymond and I felt consistently frustrated by Charlie's harshness. However, I think we're meant to be frustrated with Raymond, and not the other way round. Ultimately, we merely got a glimmer of understanding of Charlie and not a transformation.

I need to agree.

Tom Cruise is subpar in every movie he is in. What's the difference? At least it has some card counting in it to keep us distracted.

I totally disagree with this statement. Watched this movie last night for the first time in years and I was amazed at how well Cruise captured the confusing and inability to understand his brother's condition as a self-centered a$$hole of a character who slowly changed throughout the movie.

I wouldn't go as far as the people who say that he was better than Hoffman but I did think last night that Hoffman's performance overshadowed a superb job by Cruise in this movie.

Tom Cruise did a great job playing a self-centered a$3hole turned decent guy when he "took" his older brother Raymond cross-country on a joy ride. I also agree that Dustin Hoffman had the best performance of the film as the autistic savant, "Rain Man".

I can't wait to see Adam when it comes out because I have Asperger's Syndrome and it is about time that a movie is about a person like me. I hope they don't exploit my disability, but rather enhance it just like Raymond's mental condition.

yes, you are the only one. Cruise is excellent in this movie, I would say this is amongst the best performances i have seen since the 80's.

Moreoever,I would rate Cruise amongst the best actors around at the moment. He is extremely underrated in my opinion. His performances in Rainman, Vanilla sky, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia and A few good men I would rate amongst the jewels of acting in the last 2 decades.

Unfortunately he sometimes picks blockbusters which detract from his acting skills and focus more on his muscles. But all in all, he is amongst the 5 best actors, the other being Dustin Hoffman, Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Philip Seymour Hofman.
