So, the Chatterer was a kid? Do they explain this in subsequent movies?

Don't even think it needs explaining. A child, at some point, through some actions or other got hold of the Lament Configuration and had the correct desire to open it.

i just saw this last night & i thought it was kinda just like a "wtf" moment to mess with the viewers
that kid looked like he was 10, i don't see why the Cenobites would do that to that little kid, they didn't kill Tiffany when she opened the box
Tiffany didn't have any desire, she was just a genius at puzzles, it was Channard that summoned them, not Tiffany. The young boy must have had the right desire, and the right potential within him for Leviathan to make him into a Cenobite.

There's one interesting notion people arne't considering. The Chatterer is obviously much older than his true self. It could be possible that the boy opened the box, entered the labyrinth and became trapped. Eventually as his years were spent wandering the corridors of Leviathan's realms, he was intercepted by the Engineer and turned into what he is now. His "Death" reverted him back to who he was before he entered Leviathan's domain.
This is the answer I gave myself, and is what makes most sense to me.
id like to see what made all the cenobites what they were but well thats not what happened i dont even think its in the comics (which i have not read sadly...)
desire is required to be summoned to their realm but skill opens it, yeah he was 10 but he was probably very very curious at what was in store for him... though i dont see very many young kids rushing towards disfigured people, infact my nephew wont even go near grandma cuz she has an oxygen tank and a wheel chair.
btw can anyone give me a psycho analysis on why were afraid of the the disfigured mutilated and weak (even adults are kinda ehhh about them) such as my grams i mentioned above? i dont understand

We fear it because we dont ever want to become that way ourselves. Most of us are born healthy with no disfugurement, and make it to adult life without any mutilating injuries, and are ideally strong enough to walk on our own two feet.
People are in a sence fearing that coming into contact with anyone with such afflictions will somehow cause us to become simalarly afflicted. Your grandma for instance with the oxygen tank, Im guessing she maybe has emphasima? Its not a pretty way to go, we fear death. People dont always talk about it but we actually enjoy living and would hate to have to give all this up. Therefor anything that reminds us of our mortality and just how weak we are as a species, can have a strong effect on us.
Oh and im not a doctor this is just my take on it. Hope it helps though. Sorry If im more then a year late in answering LOL

I definitely think it can be disturbing to be around. Not only because people fear becoming like that but also because you can imagine what they must be feeling. Sometimes when people don't want to visit or be around these type of people its not that they don't care. Its that they care so much that it makes themselves miserable to think about the person like that.

Chatterer, Butterball, and Female/Deepthroat were never given on-screen origins but they were on the back of there NECA figures. These are currently being accepted as cannon, until Clive either uses them or gives them new origins for The Scarlet Gospels.
I'll paraphrase but you can go look them up to read the exact text.
Chatterer: Was an boy who liked to torture others and animals and he opened the lament configuration and became the full grown Chatterer. He chatters because deep down he is still a scared little child.
Butterball: Was a kidnapper and rapist who delighted in his crimes. He opened the lament configuration he was turned into a cenobite. His eyes are sewn shot so he can not see the pleasures he so much enjoys
Female/Deepthroat: Was a nun who turned against her religious ways for sex. She opened the lament configuration as a means to fullfill her ultimate fantasy. The original name they came up for her was Deepthroat but considering it was too sexual they just named her female, which is why they gave her a sexual origin, which if she was a practicer of deepthroating, that's why her neck was disected.

Something I'm surprised hasn't been brought up is Nicholas Vince's short story about his own background for the character:

Again it can't be considered 'canon' as such but I suppose by virtue of him being the actor who played the role it elevates it a little notch above fanfiction.
Clive deliberately _did not_ give the Cenobites back stories. He specifically told the actors to create their characters' own back stories. It's in keeping with his "co-creation" ethic, letting the actors/fans/writers expand on the universe and the characters on their own recognizance.
Nick Vince, being the professional writer, naturally came up with a very rich and well-developed background for the Chatterer. Not only that, he gave the Chatterer's cohorts a few mannerisms and personality quirks in the same story. I consider "Look, See…" the short story published in Fear Magazine, to be, therefore, canon.
Doug Bradley wasn't a writer. His backstory for Pinhead came from him sitting down with Pete Atkins and doing a back-and-forth discussion over many hours. They'd ask each other questions like, "What would he (Pinhead) put in his CD player?" They couldn't quite agree whether he liked Bach, Mozart or Vivaldi better…
Simon's not a writer. He didn't make a backstory for Butterball.
And of course, the Female/Deep Throat was played by two actresses, so she didn't get a back story either. The nun story actually came from the Hellraiser comic.

Barbie Wilde recently wrote an origin story for the Female, didn't she?
And how can Nick Vince's story be considered canon if Hellbound showed us that the Chatterer became a Cenobite during childhood? Maybe that back-story could be applied to Chatterer III from the DTV sequels?

But, deep down (does anyone else agree with me here?) I feel kind of horrified over the thought that a child would go through such a terror? I try to imagine that kid after he opened the box... it's sad.

After having read this post, I began wondering this too. Perhaps the Chatterer's child self was like Johan Liebert from the manga/anime series Monster? That would be highly disturbing.

I was wondering who played him as well. His name doesn't seem to be in the IMDb credits. Neither does the kid who played Dr. Channard as a child during that split second flashback.

shareAccording to the Hellraiser wiki: Chatterer was no more than a young child living in Germany when he stumbled across the Lament Configuration while playing with his toys. Mictanleculti then solved the box and curiously walked straight into Hell unaware of what waited for him inside.
The funny thing is that his name belongs to the Aztec god of the dead.
I think they made him a kid so they can show that even a young, innocent child can be turned into a Cenobite.
