Several years ago, I'm gonna guess eight or so, but I'm usually pretty bad at guessing times so it could have been sooner or longer ago, someone asked me what my favorite Christmas movie was. And, thinking it would be funny, I said "Die Hard."

I didn't think too much of it at the time, only that it was kind of funny because it's so violent, but it did take place during Christmas.

Well, low and behold, a few years later I start hearing about this debate about whether or not Die Hard was a Christmas movie or not. They dragged Bruce Willis up on stage at his Roast to proclaim that, once and for all, Die Hard was not, in fact, a Christmas movie.

Nevertheless, the debate has raged on, causing countless hours of consternation, arguing and insults.

Well, it's no longer funny to call Die Hard a Christmas movie. So, stop it. It overshadows what a great film it was.

It is a great Christmas movie. So is Riders of Justice. Nothing funny about it. Christmastime doesn’t have to be family-oriented or dinner with people who don’t get along. I’m very familiar with this building as I used to work there. Riders of Justice is different. But I consider that one to be a good Christmas movie too. I think Riders is also the better movie.

They dont have to be family orientated , but they do have to be about christmas , not just coincidentally "set in december time with no relevence to christmas at all "

For me. This movie is Christmas. I used to work in this building. For three years. And tho I’m not recalling the building having a party. Like others I’ve been in. With canapés and champagne for all those working there. But my office had a huge party and then around 5 we’d walked over to the Century Plaza Hotel to have a fantastic meal. Drink. And dance all night. When I see this movie, I think of the Christmas at the office and I like it so much better than family ones, although that’s nice as well. I live where Christmas day is 85 degrees and all of us would go to the movies after the meal. The theaters were packed always at Christmas. The day after, you realize you are another $1000 or more in debt and you work so hard preparing the meal. The tree. Cleanup. Buying stuff. The gifts you give are nowhere the gifts you get. So I love watching this movie during Christmas and I love watching The Thin Man too. Seeing Nick and Nora in their NYC penthouse with their party. I realize this is an action movie but that’s fine. Sometimes the thing not center stage becomes more celebratory than the main thing.

Riders of Justice is more a Christmas movie probably because all these people that don’t fit in do fit in at this one moment. And it makes me tear up. There’s only so many times you can see It’s a Wonderful Life.

I like this movie a lot. But around Christmas, I want to watch things like A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, A Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, and The Santa Clause.

That's the kind of stupidity I'm talking about. It's obviously not a Christmas Movie. There's no gift giving, no Santa, no reindeer, no elves, no North Pole, no Mrs. Clause, and nothing else (other than trees and a few decorations) that we associate with Christmas. There's not even the traditional religious theme as there is no baby Jesus and no turning of the other cheek. You can make up whatever B.S. you want to support whatever skewed view you might have, but we all know the truth, this is an excellent action film that (for plot structure) ostensibly happened at Christmas time.

I am neither a troll nor a sock account. I've been posting on these boards for years, and I posted on them when they were IMDB boards. And I did watch that video. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said "stupid." I tend to be overly critical. And, yes, he does have gifts for his children, but he never actually gets to see them open them. He's too busy killing terrorists, something very un-CHRIST-mas like. And that is the majority of the film. It's really, a refute of the Christian ethic of loving your enemies and turning the other cheek. Takagi tries this and gets his face blown off. Ellis tries it and he gets dealt with similarly.

While the movie is set during Christmas, and may have the trappings of Christmas, it is most definitely not a Christmas movie with its message.

If anything, it's more of a Western. Lawman rolls into town, has to save the people from the bad guys. Lots of guns and shooting. Has a side kick and wins the girl.

I didn't say Die Hard wasn't a Christmas movie. Just that it's not the type of movie I want to watch around Christmas. It's why I left gamefaqs cause most everyone on the home video board would just say that any movie that isn't Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, or Batman Returns was a bad Christmas movie. I'm sorry but I don't watch this very often around Christmas. I watch it in the spring time and summer time. I'm so sick of everyone dissing movies like A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, and Miracle on 34th Street.

I wasn't kidding. I had never heard anyone call Die Hard a Christmas movie until I did. Maybe people had been debating it, but not where I live, and I do have TV, cable and internet access. Look at these boards. See if there really has been a debate for "decades." I'm betting not.

Okay, did a little research. Turns out the writer and director both agree that Die Hard IS a Christmas movie. However, articles on the subject only go back to about 2017, six years ago. Not "decades," but within my time frame.

The posts on the IMDb boards only got scraped to a certain point. Don't go by what you see here LOL. The IMDb boards go back to the early 90s. Only a few years worth of boards got brought over to this site. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I'll tell you a funny story about it.
My family was in Wal-Mart in December. I saw the Die Hard DVD's and put them with the Christmas movies. My daughter came over and put them back. So naturally I had to do it again. This time she breaks away and moves them again. I take a look and she hid them so I couldn't do it again. As we're walking away, I hear one of the employees tell another: Die Hard is sold out again. Go get some more.
