The opening scene sets up the later part of the movie. I only recently realized this; the man on the plane recommends to McClane to take off his shoes and socks and make fists with his toes on the carpet, so he does try it later, which is the reason he's barefoot throughout the whole movie. I can't believe it took me so many years to realize that was the whole reason for that opening scene.

I don't think of the man's "make fists with your toes", I'm thinking more of his "better than a shower and a hot cup of coffee" when I step into the shower myself.
It works too.
