Ok so I just read the thread about how her accent was flawless... Clearly the people who think this have never met an Australian or heard an Australian accent because to all the Aussies out here it was laughable. It wasn't even close! It's right up there with that pathetic Simpson's episode & I don't even think that that meant to be serious.
her voice is exactly like lindy chamberlains was - it was perfect...whether it was more australian, or more kiwi - it doesnt matter, but it was fantastic nonetheless
Aussie/New Zealand (and yes, there is a difference!) accents are difficult (see Daniel Radcliffe in "December Boys") and yes, Meryl's accent is a little laughable in this film, but if you hear Lindy Chamberlain, you can understand why Meryl sounds the way she does in the film.
I just finished watching this movie for the first time (after a very long wait) and i must say i thought her accent was nearly flawless. I did hear a few rolled r's in the fashion of Americans, but other than that she had a very okka (almost bogan) aussie accent. She sounded exactly like the real Lindy.
I didn't pick up on any kiwi in the accent at all.
Kate Winslet can also do a mean Aussie accent, as can Robert Downey Jnr.
again people it's not an Aussie accent! Lindy Chamberlain was a kiwi! She had a very strong kiwi accent. Streep did an accent accurate to the real woman. I feel like some of you assume that she went overboard with it only because you're used to hearing the aussie accents of Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett. Well the character is not even Australian. And if you watch news footage of the real Lindy you will be amazed at how successfully Streep did the character.
and specifically watch the clip of Lindy back in the 80s when she says "I just screamed out 'has anybody got a torch. Dingo's got my baby' and starts crying". In the film Streep did that news scene COMPLETELY accurate.
I've only seen the trailer but she sounded pretty good, I've heard a lot of women who talk like her (I'm Australian) obviously it's not how every Aussie talks but having listened to Lindy herself in interviews I think Meryl did great.
