Ok so I just read the thread about how her accent was flawless... Clearly the people who think this have never met an Australian or heard an Australian accent because to all the Aussies out here it was laughable. It wasn't even close! It's right up there with that pathetic Simpson's episode & I don't even think that that meant to be serious.
Whatever you say... Where are you from? I can bet not Australia because I actually LIVE in Australia & SPEAK with a Australian accent. Trust me Meryl's is pathetic!
The only reason she even got the part was because no Aussie actress at the time would touch it. I don't have anything against her I actually like some of her movies but she CAN'T do the accent it's a simple as that.
Besides I believe this movie is the biggest work of fiction known to man. Yeah it happened but no dingo took the baby & hundreds of innocent dingos died because of it.
Meryl's accent sucked? Meryl spoke in the film with an almost Australian accent, but with a slight new zealand sound to it. This is because the real Lindy Chamberlain is originally from New Zealand. Meryl may not have sounded like an Australian, but she certainly sounded like Lindy Chamberlain. If you've ever heard the real lindy speak in interviews etc, it's very difficult to tell her and meryl apart.
I did happen to know that she was from NZ originally. I remember the case well. I followed it & I saw all the footage of her talking about it through the flowing tears that I always thought were fake. Now she's come back to oversee the new piece of fiction they are making about the case which I might watch to see what else they can say about it.
But you could be right but I still think Meryl's accent was bad.
she also sounded exactly like Karen Blixon whom she played in Out Of Africa and yet everyone wanted to say the whole of Denmark thought it was laughable. She didnt start researching the character thinking she is from Australia, let me do my best aussie speak...she researched by listening to Lindy speak. All these people who attack her for doing accents, good grief folks---she is talented....live with it!
I am australian myself, but i think she did a bluddy good job. hehe. altho, i must agree its not entirely flawless. On the issue of her innocence, wasnt that already proved though the recent quashing of her conviction? I think its a notable reflection that even the law and previously conducted extensive examinations that led to her accusation are not always right and to be believed without any doubt.
hehe. but yeh thats my point, rather more importantly, Merryl Streep is an amazing actress, this wasnt one of her more significant creditations anyways. So who cares much really. :P
Not screwed up just realistic.. Pick up a true crime novel sometime... There is no shortage of stories of parents who have killed or abused their kids. You could start with Small Sacrifices & end with A child called IT.
As for that old man, Not even Lindy gave him credit.
Dingo's are really talented they can unzip tents & fold clothes as well.. or was that the crows?
& yes it is hard to do the accent & the whole purpose of this thread was to say that it wasn't flawless..
Okay, i forgive you about the comment about her accent :) But I can't understand why anyone would think that she is still guilty. I just finished a criminolgy degree and I have studied this case extensively and i can tell you that there is no possible way that Lindy could have killed azaria. It is just not possible. you should not just base your opinion on true crime books and media reports. The evidence was tampered with and the expert witness statements were severely flawed, and that is only the beginning of this massive cock-up.
It really doesn't matter what anyone thinks. If she did it (which I will always believe she did unless it is proven 100% otherwise) or didn't no-one will never know. It's always been a subject of discussion & think unless it is solved always will be.
The one thing I don't understand why she has even kept the name. If it were me & I was innocent or even if I was guilty, I wouldn't be using my nickname or keeping a last name that linked me to it at especially since she remarried why not just get rid of it altogether?
The only thing I can think of is that she wants people to know who she is. Maybe it's some weird fame thing I don't know.
but your right we'll probably never know the truth. One of the reasons why I don't think she did it is: Why would she make up such an "unbelievable" story about a dingo? Surely, she would have gone with something a little less elaborate and more convincing.
About her not changing her name after remarrying, I don't see why she should. Ok, people know who she is but why should she have to change her name?
This is our last dance This is ourselves Under pressure.
Perhaps she kept the Chamberlain part of her name so she would still be recognised at the mother of her children, who all have the surname Chamberlain? It can be very difficult/confusing for a child or parent to have a surname differing from that of other members of their family.
umm..... The australian accent itself sounds incredibly stupid.. Everytime i hear it, i just laugh..
glad you find us amusing - most unintelligent people are amused by simple things like accents, so anything we can do to help...
Australians themselves are just strange backwards people.
it appears you'd fit in well in this little fantasy country of yours then...
Remember, Australia was originally a penal colony that gained its independence. Its a country founded by rapists, child molesters, and murderers.
erm actually maybe you should go back and re-check your history books. it was ORIGINALLY the home to native australians and was then invaded and colonised by england. in fact most convicts were petty thiefs and vagrants, the reason being they were living in poverty in an overcrowded nation. i personally descend from a drunk and disorderly from glasgow...oh...the shame.... you would also find that since then (and from a very early date), australia has had millions of immigrants and is now a multicultural and vibrant country - interestingly these different cultures seem to mix and get along so much better than, for example: the USA (where i'm presuming you're from - sorry to any normal americans out there).
And speaking of a freedom: doesnt it seem stupid that in a supposedly free democracy, it is mandatory to vote in elections? It is actually a CRIME not to vote.... How *beep* up is that???
it may seem stupid to you, but then you'll find that the class difference in australia is a lot more minimal than a place like the USA where a low percentage of people turn out to vote for corrupt politicians who bow down to big business. and who makes up most of that small percentage? middle and upper classes. there is an ongoing debate in australia as to whether or not voting should be compulsory - most would agree there are strong points for both arguments - what an ignoramus like you would not know is that while voting is technically compulsary, no-one actually gets prosecuted for not voting. IF a letter is sent out to a non-voter, all it takes is a 'dog ate my homework' quick response and all is forgiven. in fact, normally the first letter is all one gets. if your objection to voting is a moral one (ie, no politician takes your fancy), there's always the good old fashioned donkey vote. since you're obviously not the smartest cookie in the jar i'll explain that one for you. you turn up, get your name ticked off, then scribble nonsense on the ballot. easy.
Getting back to that stupid sounding gutter accent, why would anyone WANT to mimic it in the first place???
well in this case meryl streep was portraying an australian woman in a film, so it was kinda important that she had an aussie accent. you're really struggling in the brain cell business aren't you? poor possum...
for everyone else: meryl's accent in this film has been an ongoing source of amusement ever since she did it. but hell, who cares, like an above poster said no aussie actress was going to take it on. lindy chamberlain is probably one of the most hated women in our history, she was absolutely persecuted in the media - cases like this can, and do, happen in every country that lives in the media age. the fact that this happened is a lot more shameful than the idiot above's comments that we are a so-called 'nation of convicts' and that it's compulsory to vote. anyway, meryl sounded kinda like a cross between a kiwi, a saffie, and an aussie... reply share
Strange backwards people - have you met any? Worked with them? In what way are they strange and backwards?
Some history for you - in England, rapists and murderers were hung. Petty thieves were deported. And that was a long time ago.
Compulsory voting (well, compulsory turning up - you can leave your voting paper blank if you don't wish to vote) has pros and cons, as does getting to choose whether you vote. There's no perfect system.
I think you really need to get out cause your narrow mind and your ignorance is probably embarrassing those around you. Travel a bit outside your own country and you'll find that not only is your way not the only way, it isn't even necessarily the right way or even the best way, just a different way.
Let's go with Xenophobic, and Culturally biased... Ignorant is good, too! It is usually a good idea not too make generalisations about accents, they really do vary across countries, area by area.
The tent was unzipped when this occurred - Lindy (along with son Aidan) had put Azaria down to sleep and had not zipped the tent back up when she went back to the eating area with Aidan.
Also, the clothing was originally found by a tourist by the name of Wally Goodwin. He went and got Constable Frank Morris, who then moved and tampered with the clothing before it was photographed. The clothing was never photographed in the position in which it was originally found.
If you are so fond of dingoes and the protection of the species, then no doubt you have read the articles/letters by the then President of The Dingo Foundation, dingo expert Mr Les Harris, which were submitted to the Alice Springs coroner before the first inquest into Azaria's death. These writings cover the possibility and plausability of a dingo taking and killing a 10lb, 9-week-old child.
You are correct. Many innocent dingoes were shot. But that is not the fault of Lindy Chamberlain. It was a very silly thing to do, considering that a dingo will digest and excrete their food within 10 to 24 hours of consumption. There would have been nothing to find in the stomachs of the dingoes that were shot, even if any of them had eaten parts of a human infant.
Perhaps you should do some more reading. John Bryson's "Evil Angels" is a good place to start.
I think her accent was a cross between Australian and New Zealand actually. I'm not sure but I think Lindy Chamberlain has some relatives in NZ, or grew up there or something. Anywhy, Meryl Streep was doing an impersonation of Lindy Chamberlain, and the copy is very close to the original.
"Stop underplaying - I can't hear you!" - ARSENIC & OLD LACE
QUOTE: Clearly the people who think this have never met an Australian or heard an Australian accent because to all the Aussies out here it was laughable.
If you knew the character she was playing was from New Zeland, why did you criticize her Australian accent? My boyfriend is from New Newland and I would say Meryl captured it pretty well. (So does he.)
If you say so. I just got back from NZ myself & picked it up slightly myself & I didn't sound like that at all. (Before anyone asks I have video) I also have a Kiwi Husband & friends & I still can't hear it.
Kiwi's sound like us but they change the sound of the vowels that all.
kate winslet did the best aussie accent i've ever heard in 'holy smoke' even though the movie really sucked....what other international actor has done a convincing accent? I can't think.
Kevin Kline's French accent in "French Kiss" (I think that's the film) was perfect. But I suppose a French accent is pretty easy to do, as are most foreign language speakers of English. I think it's harder for an English speaker to do another accent of the English language.
shewasmyrushmore!! I applaud you. As i was reading that complete fool's post everything you wrote was going through my head. I was getting ready to reply in exactly the same way you did. I am doing a degree in English and Australian history, and everything you said was spot on. We should meet for hot chocolate sometime! LMAO.
I myself am directly descended (great, great, great, great grandfather on maternal side) from a man called Thomas Sleath who stole a hankie and some silk from a store on Old Street, Saint Lukes, in London in 1832. He was a wire cutter by trade, and was so poor he needed to use his hat for the storage of his wire. He married an Irish girl when he arrived in Australia...probably to Moreton Bay penal settlement, not really sure. I'm also directly descended from three other convicts, two male and one female. One was also a petty thief, I am unsure of the other two convictions.
In the Australian legal system you are 100% innocent until proven guilty, not the other way round. Its the Crowns responsbility to demonstrate guilt otherwise the defendent is innocent.
Its a long read but will give you the knowledge to base any opinion you might have. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion but they should know all the evidence and the fact you thought the tent was zipped and the clothes neatly folded up suggests you hadnt any real knowledge on this case. I would be interested to hear your thoughts about the case after you read the crime library site. There is no shame in reversing your position if you chose to do so, as they say evil prevails when good men lay silent.
I have no idea what her motive was. I don't care what her motive was. Frankly I'm sick of the subject & wish I had never written anything in the first place. This is my opinion & until it is proved otherwise I will always believe that she got away with murder & that's all there is to it.
*sigh* Yes I know she was from N.Z... & yes I have heard Lindy Chamberlain speak & Meryl Streep sounded nothing like her or a Kiwi either.
If Meryl was doing a Kiwi accent then why when asked by an Aussie reporter if she could still do it she said in that same appalling accent "You bet I can"? Why not say "well actually it was a accent from New Zealand"?
Americans can't do our accent.. It's a well known fact.. The only person with an American accent I have ever heard that was remotely close was Nicolette Sheridan when she was on Rove.. & I think that is because she is actually English.
& the only reason that Meryl probably even did this movie was because at the time no Aussie actress would touch it.. The general Consensus was she was guilty & some people including myself still believe that is true.
Do you live, Do you die, Do you bleed, For the fantasy?
i am australian and have an aussie accent, and i think that she did it extremely well, considering that lindy was actually from new zealand in the first place. aussie accents seem to be hard for actors, and she is one of the only non-aussies to nail it.
i think while all australians are agreed that we can spot a crappy attempt at an australian accent a mile off, it is a really hard accent to mimic.
try imitating an ABORIGINAL accent yourself if you need proof. tape it and listen to yourself when you play it back and realise what a dick you sound like! ALL accents are hard to 'fake' - give credit where a genuine attempt is made, applause when some degree of success is found, and stick to mocking spike in buffy, because THAT was truly awful *LOL*
