Meryl was ROBBED!

I CANNOT beleive she didn't win an Oscar for this. Her performance was masterful and each time I think about her performance I feel bitter for her. She was beyond wonderful. Her accent was flawless and she dominates every scene she is in.

Phenomonal isn't even the word to describe how highly I think of her performance. The Acadmey must have been on drugs when they gave out the awards that year.

Anyone agree?

Weaver was certainly good at making me dislike Dian Fossey. Was that the intention?

She was robbed a lot of times.........but Jode Foster deserved the Oscar that year too.

Meryl was robbed in:
1998 - Gwynet Paltrow for Shakespeare In Love instead of Meryl for the wonderful One True Thing
1995 - Susan Sarandon for Dead Man Walking instead of Meryl for The Bridges Of Madison County
1983 - Shirley MacLaine was very good in Terms Of Endearment, but Meryl in Silkwood was awesome
1985 - Meryl's performance in Out Of Africa was the best of that year, by far.......maybe tied with Norma Aleandro for The Official Story
1981 - Katharine Hepburn's performance in On Golden Pond was a lot worse than Meryl in The French Lieutenant's Woman
2003 - Catherine Zeta-Jones won an Oscar for Chicago when Meryl's performance in Adaptation was a lot better.......and the same year she was incredible in The Hours but she dind't even get a nomination for that wonderful performance.

That's all I guess.......

reply

Maybe she didn't win the Oscar because of the crappy Aussie accent she did.

Yeh Kate's accent in Holy Smoke was great :)

Haven't seen this film yet so I can't comment on Meryl's accent, but I have seen the Accused and Jodie was great- will be interesting to see who I feel deserved the Oscar more: Jodie or Meryl?

Meryl was great in One True Thing but I think that in 98 Cate Blanchett should have won for Elizabeth- I don't even think Gwyneth should have been nominated...

I absolutely totally agree with you. Having just seen the movie last night, I was just immensely impressed by her performance.

Jodie Foster won the 1989 best actress award for the movie "Accused", which some people panned, and...... Foster's performance, saying it was not deserving of the top award.

I saw Accused recently and agree, it sure did not approach Meryl Streep in “A Cry in the Dark”.

But then again, how about Kim Basinger winning best actress for “Los Angeles Confidential” in 1998, for about five minutes of screen time portraying Veronica Lake, another misplaced award in my opinion

reply

Kim Basinger won for Best SUPPORTING actress portraying Lynn Bracken, a prostitute made up to look like Veronica Lake. Her screen time was far greater than "about 5 minutes". I liked her performance, and of the nominees that year (Gloria Stewart, Joan Cusack, Minnie Driver and Julianne Moore) I think she deserved it - although I think Julianne Moore in Boogie Nights was good too.

Bbethany7 She was robbed by not winning in A Cry, but it's not the first or last time. I definitely believe she should have won for Doubt and One True Thing. Her performances in Ironweed,
Postcards From the Edge, Julie and Julia, Bridges of Madison County were all worthy of an Oscar. In some years an actress wins (Sandra Bullock, for instance) not for the excellence of a performance, but for being around a long time without misbehaving.

__________
Bullock won for being in a field of nominees that was a pretty average year for films and performances 2009. She was a popular choice and had the competition been stronger, or had she been nominated for her performance in another year, she most likely wouldn't have won.

As for Streep's performance in this film, in an exceptionally strong year for nominees, I rate her 4th place. Not saying she wasn't oscar® worthy by this; some years a valid argument could be made as to why any of the nominees could be deserving. I just didn't find her as impressive as some of the others, by a narrow margin.

so we just dump all the other nominees--and other potential nominee-- in the wastebasket because if Streep is nominated, then she deserves to win in most cases by default. I wonder if people have even seen the other nominees' films. Yes, she should have 10 Oscars by now.

But it is Streep, SMS. She can do no wrong and the other nominess just don't hold a candle to her. Even if she played their roles, she would have been 100 times superior. You are in the wrong neck of the woods here and can't see the 'genuius' that she is!!!

She would have been awesome in Jodie Foster's role in THE ACCUSED, with her raw, real talent not to mention natural qualities ;-)

reply

She sure was.
