When Crash gets up to leave the meeting with himself, Nuke and Annie at Annie's house. Crash says " I dont believe in Quantum Physics when it comes to matters of the heart". Annie asks " what do you believe in" ?
What is the dialogue Crash says to her?

reply

Available in the quotes section:

Well, I believe in the soul, the co*k, the pu*sy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

Annie responds breathlessly,
Oh my…

reply

'You couldn't hit water if you fell out of a f'in boat.'

'If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful.'

'You don't need a quadrophonic blaupunkt, you need a curve ball'

and, it's not necessarily the 'funniest' or even 'best' line of the movie, but when Nuke is pitching in the backyard, he picks up Annie and says 'Let's make love until it's time to go to the ballpark' that just always makes me think of a hot summer day. I love it

the WORST line of the movie is when Crash is talking about how nice the show is, and how all the women have long legs and the guy (he went on to do something else, but I don't know what kind of web site I'd be able to look something like that up on) riding on the bus says 'They're really hot, huh?' SO bad

reply

Holy crap! How could I forget

He really hit the s outta that one, didn't he? He hit the f'in' bull! Guy gets a free steak

reply

My favorite line in any movie ever made is from Bull Durham. When Crash walks into the coach's office and Robert Wuhl's character asks "who are you" and Crash responds "I'm the player to be named later."

reply

I dono if its so much a line, or actually an exchange. But I love the bit between Crash and the Ump regaurding "call me a c---ksucker" That, to me, was hilarious.

"We learned more from a three-minute-record than we ever learned in school."

reply

My favorite line is
Bat Boy: Get a hit Crash
Crash: Shut up!

reply

I have tons of lines I love from this movie, but one that just cracks me up every time is when Annie tells Nuke "You think Dwight Gooden does it with his socks on?"

reply

i love the whole lollygaggers scene, and also when nuke shakes off crash and crash goes to the mound to tell him to throw a curveball and crash says he wants to annouce his presents with authority... then crash tells the batter fastball and he hits a homerun

reply

Could someone please give me the exact lines that go something like:

Crash- You play the game with fear and arrogance.

Nuke- Fear and ignorance...

Thanks in advance!

R

reply

The five different "Oh my" exclamations by Annie throughout the film
and "Let's have some fun, goddamn it!" by Crash.

reply

Sorry but best line is:

"Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well. "

Just the way Costner said it is very memorable.

Without a doubt Costners best role by far!

reply

Just a polite spelling correction: "announce his 'presence' with authority... not 'presents.'
This, too, is one of my favorite scenes and lines in the movie.
Question: what is name of song and vocalist playing on phonograph in Annie's house? French singer. Nuke makes an inane reference to it.

reply

I think the song is "Je ne regrette rien" by Edith Piaf

reply

After much searching, I did find the title. Thank you very much for your reply. I love that song and her rendition. Can you direct me to a translation?

pfernandez-6

reply

"I regret nothing"
It was the song that summed up her short soaring career. Rent "La Mome"

reply

I know its a tad too late but the singer is correct but the song is "LA VIE EN ROSE". Just downloaded it!
It is a beautiful movie and believe it is in Saving Private Ryan!

Say hello to my fast...

reply

Yes, one of the later songs is La Vie en Rose", earlier Annie listens first to the very appropriate "Non, je ne regrette rien" (No, I regret nothing).

reply

...I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

reply

I'm not sure if the line's correct: "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains."

reply

Crash: "After 12 years in the minor leagues, I don't try out."

Amen, brother! You tell her! That's a perfect line to give all the game playing women out there.

reply

Edith Piaf don't know he song

reply

nuke talking to the reporter about his 1st win: "" its a rush, its really awesome in a tubular kinda way" Crash in the background with a priceless look on his face mutters out: hopeless, utterly f**ing hopeless"lol.

reply

great line!

reply

My favorite line, spoken by Susan Sarandon (which makes it SO ironic) is:

"This world is MADE for those of us who aren't cursed with self-awareness."

reply

the bat boy: get a hit crash" Crash: shut up"" laughes to himself, lol.

reply

nuke: i held it like an egg"" crash: yeah and he scrambled the son of a b**ch"

reply

Nuke: What you are doing out here? I'm crusin', man.
Crash: I want you to throw the next pitch at the mascot.
Nuke: What? Why?
Crash: Just throw it at the bull. Trust me.
Nuke: Okay, you're the boss.

He nails the bull - "uh!" says the mascot. (which makes me laugh in itself)

Nuke and Crash both laugh.

Batter: This guys crazy.
Crash: I wouldn't dig in there if I was you. I don't know where it's going to go...swear to God.

I love Crash's evil laugh right after that statement.

My husband and I repeat that exchange all the time - especially when we're watching baseball on TV and there's a conference on the mound between the catcher and pitcher...

Thanks, everybody, for making me crack up at work with all of the favorite quotes. This movie is my favorite ever. I can't stand Susan Sarandon in this movie, so I actually love it despite her (even though she is good in it - for some reason she just bugs the crap out of me).

reply

This movie is full of great, quotable lines that I use often. ("Isn't that a little excessive for the Carolina League?") But the one that always gets a laugh out of me is when Nuke is pitching good and Crash comes out to the mound and tells him to throw one at the mascot. Real quiet, and to himself, Nuke says:

"It's a ball."

That always cracks me up.

The best line from the commentary is Tim Robbins, during his character's introduction/sex scene. "That is not my ass. Anymore." Classic.

reply

When Crash tells the batter....."Fast ball. And when you speak of me, speak well". I laugh outloud every time.

reply

You've mixed two scenes up.

It's actually "Charlie, here comes a deuce, and when you speak of me, speak well."

My favourite line in the movie.

Second favourite is when they're all on the mound because Nuke's father's in the stands, Jose's glove's cursed, and they're going on about Jimmy and Millie's wedding. The asst coach Larry runs in to find out what's going on and Crash gives him the list ending with "we're dealing with a lot of sh*t"

reply

Larry: Excuse me, but what the hell's going on out here?

Crash: Well, Nuke's scared because his eyelids are jammed and his old man's here. We need a live... is it a live rooster?

[Jose nods]

Crash: We need a live rooster to take the curse off Jose's glove and nobody seems to know what to get Millie or Jimmy for their wedding present.

[to the players]

Crash Davis: Is that about right?

[the players nod]

Crash: We're dealing with a lot of *beep*

-could not stop laughing after this one

reply

Crash: Million Dollar arm. All my limbs put together aren't worth $1.99. You got talent, I got brains.

reply

when nuke tries to hit crash with the pitch and breaks the window, crash" ball four" lol.

"Celebrities pretend to be normal and down to earth"

reply

Somebody mentioned the socks line earlier, but I love the two lines before it as well.
Annie- Honey why don't you try taking your socks off first.
Nuke- My socks? It's cold in here.

GREAT!

And

Annie- At least the son of a b***h left me breakfast.
Then she bites into just an apple. Great as well.

Plus the whole Edith Piaf thing, I believe one of the songs was "La Vie en Rose." Not positive though.

reply

There are so many!!

But I loved

Crashes speach to Annie
when Annie calls Nuke, Crash
When Annie trys to seduce Nuke and he say
"I knew it your playing with my mind"
and Annie say
"I'm trying to play with your body"

Also the commentary favorites were
Thats not my ass.... Anymore!!

And towards the end when Crash is headed to Annies
Tim and Kevin are talking and Tim says this is the worst part of the movie
when Annie answers the door he yells "NO turn back hunny"

Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.

reply

The exchange with Robert Wuhl ending in "we're dealing with a lot of sh*t" is my favorite. But I also love the line before that when Crash tells Nuke "hey he's just your old man, he's as full of sh*t as anybody"...great line

reply

Well, basically every line in the movie is a quotable classic. Here are some more not yet mentioned:

"I quit." Crash leaves, pauses outside, kinda stamps his foot to himself, turns back, cracks the door open and asks: "Who do we play tomorrow?" (When Crash finds out he's only in Durham to babysit Nuke).

"Honey...we all deserve to wear white." (Annie to Millie while sewing Millie's wedding dress).

"I know it's stupid, write it down." Later, "I know. Write it down." (Crash to Nuke while coaching him on talking to the press).

"Baby ducks are cute!" (Annie to Nuke when she is trying to seduce him and he is trying to resist).

"Well this is the damndest season ever...the Bulls can't lose and I can't get laid!" (Annie to Crash when she goes to his apt during Nuke's winning streak).

"Who are you? Do you have a job?" "Yes I have a job. I teach part time at Allemans (sp?) Junior College: English 101 and Beginnin' Composition!" (Crash & Annie in that same scene).

"I used to work at Sears. Sold Lady Kenmores. Nasty, Crash. Nasty." (That assistant coach guy to Crash in the manager's office).

"Well, candlesticks always make a nice gift." (Asst coach guy when he goes out the mound to find out they are dealing w/ a lot of s**t).

Not a line, but when Crash goes out to Nuke on the mound to find out what's the matter and Nuke tells him not to look but his dad is in the stands. Crash immediately turns around and waves.

"Women do get wooly...when they're wearin' a dress..." (Nuke's screwed up words to the women do get weary song on the bus.

"I can get us a rainout." (betting, taxi ride to the park, sprinklers on...) "Oh my goodness! Looks like we've got ourselves a rainout!"

Not a line, but when Crash unsnaps Annie's garter flawlessly and it turns out she's wearing Jockey For Her undies!! Totally indicates her complex personality.

"You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball." (Detail from the lollygagging scene mentioned earlier).

"Rose goes in the front, big guy." (Crash to Nuke when he finds him in the garter belt in the locker room).

"He's a Mayan Indian. Or an Aztec. I forget which one." (Annie describing Fernando Valenzuela to Nuke. I might have gotten those backwards).

"Sorry Millie. Didn't recognize you with your clothes on." (Manager when he finds Millie & Nuke 'in flagrante delicto' in the locker room).

Not a line, but the scene where Annie is writhing on the bed and it turns out Crash is painting her toenails.

When Nuke's dad suggests they have a word of prayer when Nuke is called up to the majors, and Annie says, "Oh...let's not."

"Anything that goes that far oughtta have a damn stewardess on it, dontcha think?" (perhaps that fast...? Anyway, Crash to Nuke when someone's hit another pitch out of the park).

"Good. Never hit someone with your throwing arm. Geez, I can't keep giving you this free advice!" (I got that a bit wrong, but it's after Nuke has punched out a drunk Crash in the old pool hall).

"Why both of you, of course!" (Annie to Crash & Nuke in the first bar scene when she invites them home. Followed by Crash swigging his beer and nodding to Nuke like, "let's go." Sets up the mentoring relationship perfectly).

Not a line, but when Crash & Annie are at the batting cage and he starts hitting the automatic pitches without even looking, then the last one sails right past him and punctuates the scene when it thumps into the backstop.

"My attempts at housekeeping were feeble at best." (Annie voiceover the morning after Crash leaves).

"I hit my dinger and I hung 'em up." (Crash to Annie when he returns).

"I just wanna be." "I can do that too!" (Crash and Annie on the porch at the end).

Like I said...just about every line in the movie is quotable and I can't get through the day without channeling at least one.

reply

Great quotes. I love this movie.

Here are some more:

- When Crash says, "This game's fun, O.K? Fun, goddammit."

- After Crash's great speech to Annie on his way out the door, Nuke says, "Hey, Annie, what's all this molecule stuff?"

- When Annie asks Millie how Nuke was, Millie says, "Well, he *beeps* like he pitches--sort of all over the place."

- When Crash tells Nuke, "The rose goes in the front, big guy."

Awesome movie.

"That is not how a chicken sounds. Chickens don't clap!" -- From the best show ever

reply

Yes, I agree that every line is a quote. I keep repeating them and I leave people open-mouthed sometimes.

A friend has just called me telling me he's bought a William Blake collection and I couldn't help but saying:

"William Blake? William Blake! What do you mean William Blake? I mean william Blake!"

Whoa, whoa:

"Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a fungo"

How about this one (a poster mentioned it, but here are the lines):

-You guys! You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out the dugout. Do you know what that makes you? Larry?
-Lollygaggers!
-Lollygaggers!

Hilarious.

Are you gonna bark all day, little doggie, or are you gonna bite?

reply

Frenetic gum chewing (chomp chomp chomp) distant look of concentration: "Candlesticks. Candlesticks always make a nice gift. We can check the registry, maybe a place setting".

reply

Freemanlaura, I think you got ALL my favorites in your post!

You know, I'm an artsy/literary chick who doesn't like sports movies, plus I like less than half of Costner's movies... and yet, Bull Durham is near perfection, maybe the best comedy I've ever seen (fighting it out with The Big Lebowski and This is Spinal Tap), and I love K.C. in it. His circa 1988 self can drink scotch while ironing clothes in my house anytime. That little warm-yet-evil laugh makes my toes curl.

For me, it's not even the dialogue itself so much as the pitch-perfect comic delivery on the line when Crash makes it rain -- "HO, my goodness!" I can't help cracking up laughing then, no matter how many times I've seen it.

I don't come from hell. I came from the forest.

reply

Anne "What dose it say"
Millie "I want to make love to you"
Annie "Oh my"

reply

Larry: Excuse me, but what the hell's going on out here?
Crash Davis: Well, Nuke's scared because his eyelids are jammed and his old man's here. We need a live... is it a live rooster?
Crash Davis: We need a live rooster to take the curse off Jose's glove and nobody seems to know what to get Millie or Jimmy for their wedding present.
Crash Davis: Is that about right?
Crash Davis: We're dealing with a lot of *beep*
Larry: Okay, well, uh... candlesticks always make a nice gift, and uh, maybe you could find out where she's registered and maybe a place-setting or maybe a silverware pattern. Okay, let's get two! Go get 'em.

reply

The best line has no lines, any "ball player's favorite part is, after giving the cold shoulder to Annie, "Goodnight", is where Crash is wandering the streets, stops, and picks up a cardboard tube and critiques his swing in the window.
This is no doubt, the best "baseball" movie out there.

reply

you guys are missing one of my personal favorites but im too lazy to look up the exact quote

strikeouts are fascist. Throw some more groundballs. It's more democratic

reply

You've all hit on some gems. My personal fave is:

"C'mon Annie. I know you're in there. I can hear that crazy Mexican singer"

(Edith Piaf singing "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien"--NOT "La Vie en Rose")

reply

"Honey, would you prefer I was in bed with him using your name, or in bed with you, using his?"

You can't fault logic like that.

reply

The rose goes in the front, big guy.

Wouldn't it be awesome if that garter was actually Susan Sarandon's from The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

Sedagive?!!!

reply

can't remember the exact quote, when Crash asks for a heat, Meat shakes off, then Crash goes like, he's shaking off the heat, can you believe this ****, then, here comes the deuce, *hit* that ball went flying out of here in a hurry

Mondale to Hart: "Where's the beef?"

Just read through this thread- so many quotable lines!
But the one missing for me is the scene in the bar where Crash describes the difference between a .250 hitter and a .300 hitter. I don't recall it verbatim, but basically he points out that over a season one extra hit a week makes the difference- " a ground ball with eyes, a dying quail" and you're in Yankee Stadium.
That one just haunts me. (It's not just true in baseball).
