Why does Adam call out to Jane from the attic?

Towards the start of the movie after their accident on the covered bridge, Adam and Barbara are up in the attic when Jane and her daughter for some reason wearing funeral clothing; all black.....for some unknown reason, we know it can't be for Adam and Barbara's wake or else the whole home would be having company with a whole room full of people bringing food or grocery store catering in the living room, family room and hallway downstairs. Meanwhile, Jane and her daughter park the car and were walking towards the front door for some reason and Adam goes to the window and starts calling her at the top of his lungs, waving to her as well. Meanwhile Barbara sits there uninterested as he gives up and stops calling Jane. She asks her husband blandly if Jane can see him or not. He admits to her she couldn't see him. Okay, here's the thing. Jane isn't dead; she's still alive. By this point Adam was dead and he knew he was dead because this was after Barbara pointed that out to him, but he still tried to communicate with a living person. Barbara has already informed Adam that they didn't survive the crash, and has just read that the living usually won't see the dead; and the Maitlands can't leave their home either. Yet here Adam is thinking a living person is going to respond to him. Puzzling......a bit baffled by that.

Why shouldn't he test the proposition that the living can't see him? He's got nothing better to do!

And some of the living can see him anyway. She might be one.

What Otter said. To add to that, why would the wake be held at the house? A wake is held in the family's house only because it is convenient for the family. However, this house is now vacant, on the market - why would you hold a wake there? That's not only impractical, but actually disrespectful and not a little ghoulish. The wake would instead be held at a rented function room.

I doubt the wake was at the house. If it were there would be many cars, other people, a priest, signs of an event. Perhaps Jane had just come from the funeral and wanted to instantly move forward with the sale - you know how unreasonably eager she was in the beginning…
