He cheated because he could. He was a schmuck.

"Penfold, shush."
The answer to this question is abundantly clear...Michael was a jerk!
If you had read the book "Beaches" by Iris Ranier Dart, you would have much more information about Michael's character and the way he treated not only his wife and daughter, but how he later treated CC when they met years after Hillary was dead.
I love this movie and the music, I am a huge Bette Midler fan, for her singing and acting. I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy the film. You will learn so much more about all the characters and the whys and wherefores of the movie!

I think it was a quick way to write him out of tge picture. The book version gives you a more plausible reason why he left. In short, he was a real and truly major a**hole, who was vindictive and played a real part in why Whitney and CC did not talk for those years. In the book he didn't want any kids all and just did not love Whitney. In the movie, they made him nice and he just did not love Whitney anymore which was true to the book. He just fell in love in someone else.
