Becky.....

Watching the early shows in rerun, and it amazes me what complete bitch they wrote Becky as. It made for some drama, but the girl was insufferable.

Selfish, self-centered, disrespectful. Demanding, even through she knew the family was always broke.

When Dan's bike business when under, her first remark was about how it was going to affect HER material needs, not "Gee Dad, I'm sorry." She was always playing the martyr.

I know parents love (and make excuses for) their kids, but this chick had no redeeming qualities.

To Lecy's credit, she was so good at the part, that I hated her.

And, then there's Mark... Other than being good looking, what redeeming qualities did he bring to the table?

I always had a feeling that their "great love" was nothing but a pair of glands calling out to one another.

No kidding! She only married him because her father's failure cost her the chance to go to college at 18, at that point she's have done anything to get away from home. Including lie to herself about how she felt about that idiot.

I knew a girl just like her in real life. She was accepted into all the best colleges, and as both her divorced parents were moderately well off she didn't think there would be a problem. But her father was getting married again and her mother decided that sending her younger siblings to private schools was her highest priority, and neither would help her at all, and of course since they were both well off she didn't qualify for any advantageous financial aid. So, the girl married some dipshit just to get away from them, and was soon pregnant, at 18. I wish I knew what happened to her, but it's not like I'd keep in touch with assholes like her parents.

The "elopement episode" aired last night. I couldn't figure out WHAT her motivation was -- other than being a horny teen.

Beck was always supposed to be the "smart one," but she clearly didn't think this one through -- or she was thinking with her twat! πŸ™„

I think her motivation was just to get away from her parents. If she'd been able to go to college, she'd have left Mark behind, and forgotten him after a couple of weeks. But of course she didn't think things through, no angry teenager ever does! Neither does any teenager who's been confronted with a situation with no good options for the first time in their life, so the whole situation is completely believable, like I said I've seen something like it happen in real life.

That was one of the things that made the show stand out, sometimes they refused to use the pat sitcom ending where everything is fine after 30 minutes, sometimes they went to the dark places that no other sitcom would touch, and when the characters made foolish choices, the consequences stuck around for years. Or in Becky's case, a lifetime.

Yes.

A pair of 1990 era kids no doubt. Would have been nice to have had an older son to also be critical of Dan. Not that I enjoy insufferable kids but it would have been interesting to see a son go from hero worshipper to critic which happens often in real life.
