Is it just me or is the finale one of the worst in TV history??

I found the finale of Roseanne so creepy and disturbing. It still bothers me. Basically, we were living a lie for 8 years? The characters we loved, we actually knew nothing about? I know it had to end somehow, and the last season isn't so great anyway.... but why go this direction? It actually makes me sad.

It's not just you.

It was a stupid finale. Finales need closure, but this just lead to more questions.

Did Becky and David get hitched? Or Mark and Darlene? Either one would be confusing.

I just pretend season 9 never happened.

reply

I was confused on that as well.

If Mark was with Darlene, does that mean she ran off and got married? While Becky stayed home, went to school and married the boy they liked?

And were Mark and David actually brothers, or did she add that in?

And if they were brothers who married sisters, was David the older brother, marrying the big sister?

Because if Mark was still older, he was 18 when dating 17-year-old Becky. But Darlene still seemed young when Mark came around. Wasn't she still between 11-13. Bit odd to be dating an 17, or 18 year old then.

reply

It wasn't just you, and it wasn't just the finale. It was the whole last season. The show was deteriorating for the last couple seasons, then they went ahead and tanked it.

reply

I'd go so far as to say it's one of the worst. For me, the only thing that keeps it below How I Met Your Mother on my list is I wasn't as invested in Roseanne by the end. They'd already lost me.

reply

Basically I took it as they didn't really win the lottery. I didn't look too much more into it. I loved everything about this show. I miss it :(

reply

The last episode wouldn't have bothered me as much if they didn't throw in the "Becky was really with David and Mark was really with Darlene this whole time" oh and by the way, "Jackie was a lesbian this whole time" at the very last minute. That was ridiculous. So I pretend those last sentences were never said.

The thing about Dan dying from a heart attack is actually realistic. But the whole lottery win story line I hated. There are episodes from the ninth season I still haven't seen all the way through. I just can't.

reply

I do agree with the Becky/Mark/Darlene/David line. Those pairs didn't make sense at all after watching all that the couples went through together.

reply

I just pretend it never happened....it ruins the entire series otherwise.

reply

oh and by the way, "Jackie was a lesbian this whole time" at the very last minute. That was ridiculous.

I never thought much into it, because Roseanne's final monologue was silly. I suppose if Jackie was a lesbian, little Andy didn't exist.

reply

Not just you. It's often listed as one of the worst whenever a magazine makes one of those best of/worst of lists. I don't see why we couldn't have just had Roseanne being a writer, but writing it true to how we knew it. And the whole "Jackie's gay but my mom isn't" was stupid. She said she made her mom a lesbian to "empower her as a woman" (somewhat offensive), but then why would she then have portrayed her supposedly gay sister as straight? Her rationale was paradoxical. So even as a self-contained episode, it still make zero sense.

And if my mom wrote a book in which she admits I would be better with my sister's spouse and vice versa, and went ahead and wrote our lives that way instead, I'd be a little bothered.

I also kind of pretend baby Jerry never existed. To me the Conners will only ever have three children.

reply

It rarely ever occurs to me that Jerry ever existed.

I don't know anyone would take the finale so seriously. It's as if they think it was written from the beginning in 1988 that everything that took place on the series would be revealed at the end to be some alternate reality Roseanne created for a book. The big reveal was just something thrown together at the last minute to wipe away everything that happened during season 9 but they went a little overboard.

reply

I had literally forgotten they'd had another kid until a current re-run.

Star Wars is like pizza, even when it's bad it's still pretty good.
