What do you guys really think about Beverly

I did think she was a little out there, but the other side of her that Roseanne and Jackie had no idea about was too funny. Like the one where she was in the leather outfit and wearing the 4 inches heels and there was one episode I think she was with Fred and he saw the other side of Beverly.

I've discussed this before on other threads: Bev is the kind of character you love to hate. Would I be able to tolerate her hypocrisy and oppression in real life? Of course not. But as a character on TV, her idiosyncrasies are highly amusing to watch. I love her "pretentious" behavior: her mannerisms, her outlook, her beret... lol.

Plenty of sitcoms have characters like her that "you love to hate". Think about it. In my personal TV viewing experience, there's the antagonistic characters on "The Office" that I love watching but would probably not enjoy in real life, if they were actual people: Angela, Dwight, Stanley, Michael.

And regarding Bev's "secret" identity that she revealed to Fred in Season 7: they never expanded further with it, so it kind of felt shoehorned in for that episode. I'm not saying it wasn't a true facet of hers, but it was never explored again.

I'm sorry to have to make you discuss this again...lol. Yes I have seen other characters similar to Beverly on other sitcoms, by the way I never seen The Office.

I sincerely disliked her. Someone who let's their husband beat on their children? Yeah, she could have been abused too, but she didn't seem to be a battered woman. She was all ok with revenge when he finally left her.
The emotional abuse was also too much for me. She was never even remotely likable for me. Estelle played her perfectly.

AHHHHH! That was scary!

reply

Abuse can be psychological as well as physical. Out of fear of the abuser those who are abused can cover up the issue extremely well. I learned shocking things about some of my classmates from high school many many years after the fact. Do not assume anything where abuse is concerned.

reply

^ Well put.

Of course I don't condone anyone who enables or even tolerates abuse, but who knows what Bev was going through during it. Also: it was a different time back then, where wives would rarely dare to challenge their husbands. We take our current culture for granted, in that sense.

I always thought that Roseanne used her. She treated bev like an atm and used her as a babysitter.

This. I felt like Beverly gave them good advice, but Roseanne and Jackie were too above her to take her advice. I also felt like Roseanne didn't want her kids to like her mother. Like when Bev wanted to give Becky the car or DJ the video game console. I love when Bev gets back at them by selling her share to Leon.

Was she annoying? Yes

Was she manipulative? Yes

But, Jackie and Roseanne were the same and just as disrespectful.

Black men and a whole lot of *beep* white men have had plenty fun adoring my ass!

I liked her when she made guest appearances. When she more or less became a regular, I got tired of her really quick. The voice. The hair. The pants. I just wanted her to go away. Plus, like another poster commented, I felt more sorry for her than anything because Roseanne and Jackie treated her so badly. I enjoyed how Roseanne and her had a good relationship during the first few seasons, then all the sudden Bev was some neglectful sow.
