Anyone from the 80's remember?

Some of the 80's iconic stuff that happened in the show, also happened in your own house:

- The Mall on Saturdays.

- Pizza (especially the 2 for 1 deals) on Friday (I know this isn't specific to the 80's, but it was definitely realistic.)

- The awesomeness of getting that first VCR. And going to the video store.

- Cooking a whole supper in the microwave for the first time.

- Teenage girls wearing Mom jeans.

- Mom in hair rollers to make sure the perm stayed poofy.

- Wrapping the phone cord around things when you're talking to a friend for a long time.

- Answering the phone without having a clue who is on the other end.

- Chip's parents having a "red meat night."

I still go to the mall on Saturdays, have pizza on Friday and heat up my dinner in the microwave. I'm not a woman, but I imagine that some women still wear hair curlers.

As far as the VCR goes, I was still using a VCR and going to the video store up until the mid 00's. In fact, we didn't even get a VCR until around 1989, so I don't see that as an "80s" thing.

The phone thing, eh. Don't miss those cords and Russian Roulette phone calls. That's one of the few innovations that I appreciate. Much of the rest of modern day technology, compared to 15-30 years ago, I think has been spoiled. I miss record and video stores, and hand held music (CDs) and movies (VHS/DVDs). But screw phone cords and no caller ID.

I remember our first VCR was Beta as well, and our selection was pretty poor at the video store. We had rotary phones, and then a phone in the wall just like on the Roseanne show. As well, I remember the controversy and fear of getting the first microwave - people were afraid of getting radiation poisoning! I remember our first one had a dial that you turned, like a toaster oven. I was born in 1981. The entire Roseanne show reminds me so much of my childhood.

Yeah, I definitely still use curlers. Not curlers for a perm like the OP mentioned, of course, but curlers are still the best way to really curl long hair. I own irons too, but those can take a long time.

Roller skating from morning to night on weekends. That was my favorite thing.

Oh, yeah! Every time I hear "Take On Me" or "Mr. Roboto", it takes me back to the roller rink on a Friday night.

You Give Love A Bad Name always takes me back. That was fun to skate to.

Early '90s but "Ice Ice Baby" was the big one for us. This was right before rollerblades took over, which I still don't think are quite as fun. Then of course we had the Queen staples, mainly "We Will Rock You".

I was just going to say I remember Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" would always be played, where you had to squat down when the whistle was blown, lol. Around here, akating in the 90s was still big.

And some of us never let it go and do derby in adulthood, lol. (Well... did derby. I decided to scrap it in fear a real tanker would cause me to break a bone.)

Me too! Still have my '80's white skate boot roller skates with the red wheels! Loved going Roller skating!

And who can forget the arcades? That's where I spent most of my time as a kid. I was young in the '80s, but I certainly remember going there. And to stores that had grab-bags and snap bracelets. Were those an '80s thing?

I don't recall much about the first time we got a VCR or a microwave. We had both for as long as I can remember. We lived in a trailer, not because we were poor, but because it was more practical where we lived in icy North Dakota. So bills were cheap and my parents, being stuck at the house a lot, bought gadgets. (Pre-fabricated homes weren't quite as available at the time.)

I actually DO remember pizza on Fridays! Mainly because, unlike a VCR, I distinctly remember when my parents bought a Nintendo. We often ordered pizza and played as a family. We were out of North Dakota and living in a town much like Lanford by then. :-) Good times. And yes, video store trips were common, but we also went on Tuesdays because that's when the new releases came out.
