DJ became a jerk when he got older
I noticed when DJ was a little kid he was more likeable, but once he reached puberty, he became a jerk to everybody and was more meaner too, especially to David.

shareI agree.

jerk is being kind.. they wrote him to be an insufferable little douche.. but it was kind of necessary.. they had to make him stand out somehow.. he had no personality otherwise, easily the least important character on the show.
Welcome to the El Flamingo, Jeffrey!
Don't piss in the pool, Jeffrey.
I've been saying this for years. DJ and Darlene were the favored children and rarely get punished. Everyone claims DJ wasn't bad. :/
The real problem with DJ, and Jackie in the later seasons, is he becomes the go to fill in character. We have an episode about racism, let's stick DJ in there. We have about someone crashing the car, let's stick DJ in there. I'm surprised they gave Jackie the internet addiction and not DJ. He never really got to be fleshed out like Becky and Darlene. I'm sure if the went on and if they aged the children faster, this role of character who changes to fit the topic of the episode would have went to Andy.
DJ was like the black sheep of the family and mistreated and mocked a lot though. Not that those facts excuse anything but its true.
shareI didn't mind DJ's evolution so much. Most kids contort and evolve rapidly during puberty. It seemed totally plausible that he would change in the way he did. Didn't necessarily seem "out of character" to me. Plus, it was good for a few laughs at a time when the show sorely needed it.

The first seasons he was nothing but an adornment. When the girls left there was more room for episodes kinda centered around him like when he starts to.play hockey, does not.want to kiss a black girl and becomes religious. I think he was just like the girls, kids with little self control or manners.
shareWouldn't you, if you had hardly any screentime compared to the rest of your family?
shareHis problem was that he was never funny. His comic timing felt the most contrived. It wasn't just that he was a dick.
shareIn my opinion, they all became jerks as the show went on. A lot of people seem to think that Sarah Chalke's Becky was too nice, and I thought that at first, too, but as I watched it more, I changed my mind. Becky still blamed Roseanne for things and yelled at her just like Lecy's Becky, and she told Darlene that she couldn't get close to anybody. That comment really hurt Darlene, and Becky never even apologized for it!
Even Dan, who's a pretty likeable guy became meaner, as did Roseanne, Jackie, Darlene, and DJ. The show in the later years still had some pretty good episodes, but the first five seasons were the best in my honest opinion.
